To break :28 on 50 FR

Get under 1:02 on 100 FR

OK that's going to be my focus up to zones...I'll also be looking to break a 2:50 SCY 200 BR but that is falling 2nd to the Free goals.

This year I've gone :27.98 on the 50, 1:02.12 on the 100 and 2:45.x in the 200 BR. I'm pretty happy.

I started my 2010 date on 09/01/09 due to the new USA swimsuit rules, so starting then and up thru now I can happily report that I:

1. Have not raced in fast suits USA or masters since 09/01/09;
2. Cook at least 2x per week and only eat out on Fri, Sat, and Sun
3. Use my USMS FLOG religously to track weight, swim, dryland training, etc;
4. Race at least once per month on average;
5. Bought a VASA trainer and of course track it in my FLOG.
6. Built up to a full masters workout again (now averaging just under 2,000 SCM per workout per my FLOG).

I must say that out of all the things I am doing differently now, using the FLOG feature has been the most useful. It is amazing that I thought I was somewhat inconsistent in the weight room last year, but when I put it down on paper, I literally only went up to the weight room SEVEN times!!!

RE: 2009 Swimming New Years Resolutions

1. Keep it fun. Still be in swimming at the end of 2010. All other goals are subordinate to this one.

2. Participate in at least one meet in each of SCY, LCM, and SCM. LCM will probably be most difficult for me as there are not many accessible meets.

3. Participate in SCY nats. I'm motivated by this because Atlanta is close & I can get there. I've never been to a nats meet. It'll be a hoot! 3B. Hit the qualifying standard in the 6 events I want to swim (100, 200, 500, 1000 free, 100 & 200 back). 3C. Be delighted at the results, whatever they are. Being there and swimming competently (see 3B) is reason enough to celebrate.

4. Participate in my state's Senior Games sequence, regional and states. 2010 is a qualifying year for 2011 nats, so this is necessary to set up for next year.

5. Times. I'd really like to break 2:20 in the 200 SCY back and 2:00 in the 200 SCY free. In my age group, this would be roughly in the neighborhood of top 20 in the backstroke event, and top 40 in the freestyle. I'd be very happy with that!

RE: 2009 Swimming New Years Resolutions

To go gently into that good night.

No, not die.

Reigning it in here a bit to keep myself somewhat focused and sane:

Once again be able to swim butterfly for an entire 50 yards/meters and to swim fly at a meet (used to be my fastest, now I die before I finish 25 yards/meters)
Work on turns, they are my weakest link and I know I don't spend enough time on them now
Swim more consistently. I was better in 2009 than in 2008 and I would like to keep the momentum going.
I'd like to add a lose weight goal, but hopefully that'll come with everything else.

RE: 2009 Swimming New Years Resolutions

To enjoy life to the fullest, spend at least 5 months of every year in Melaque Mexico.

RE: 2009 Swimming New Years Resolutions

2010 resolutions

Things I did in 2009 that surprised me:

1. Exotic OW plans out the window with no funds to travel all summer.

2. Lost weight.

3. Started weights.

4. Took seconds off backstroke. (Thanks, Chris Stevenson!)

5. Started working with Illinois' LMSA OW committee.

6. Finally got out West, climbed new hills, swam in glacial lakes.

Here are some thing that I want to do health/swimming wise for 2010:
Health
Eat better and finally get back to about 200-210 with my weight and lower body fat

Swimming
Make it back to finals at the Mid Altantic Champs in March, probably B and C finals obviously
Get near my lifetime 1650 time of 17:06 and 10:30 something range with my 1000
Get close to break 2:00 in my 200 yard fly
Get under 4:30 in my 400 IM
Qualify for the USA Swimming Sectionals Champion Series Meets
Just make more vast improvements in my Long Course times. Maybe get an AA ranking if super fast swimmers in my age group don't do long course this summer!!!
Finally do my first 5K Open Water swim this summer and do some USMS Open water champs this summer.

RE: 2009 Swimming New Years Resolutions

2009:

2010:
1) minimum of 2 dolphin kicks off of every wall (I don't do breaststroke to the point of not being sure if I just spelled it correctly)

2) sub-1:10 100yd flutter kick w/board (current best is 1:21 on last of a 5x100 on 1:40 decend kick set)

3) RC exercises w/surgical tubing minimum 3x/wk

3. Do cardio, strength, wt and flex workout x3 or more if time permits/wk.
4. Do strength and flex workout before I go to work and after I get home from work, at least 30 min. each.

Ok, #4 will be a challenge since I leave my house at 5:30am and come home b/m 8:30pm and 9pm.

Brundage

How'd you do with your 2009 Swimming Resolutions?

Here were the goals I laid out:

As for 2009, these are straightforward, but still somewhat ambitious:

Training: At the start of each season/month/week, lay out a training plan and then stick with it. Training plan should include a set of "must do" workouts followed by a set of "nice to have" additions.

I have done this for the SCY season and, as I posted today in my blog (forums.usms.org/blog.php, I'm on target for the meager two initial weeks.

Competition:

Swim every event at least once in a meet in the SCY season.
Beat target times in at least 2 of my 4 target events:

500 free: go under 4:40

went 4:52 in 2008, but SCM time converts to about 4:46

400 IM: go under 4:05

went 4:17 in 2008, but SCM time converts to about 4:11

200 free: go under 1:44

went 1:48.8 in 2008, but SCM time coverts to about 1:46

200 IM: go under 1:56

didn't swim in 2008, but went 2:02.7 in 2006 and my SCM time converts to 1:58.4

My results:

Training: pretty solid ... definitely the most-planned and best-executed training of my Master's career. But, still a lot of room for improvement.
Competition:

Swam every event in SCY!
As for goal times, assuming converting SCM to SCY counts, I made 1 of 4 and close on another:

200 free: SCM time converts to 1:43.4! (goal sub-1:44)
400 free: my SCM time converts to about 4:40
400 IM: didn't approach 4:05, but dropped to 4:12
200 IM: got closer with a 1:57.4

WHAT ARE YOUR 2010 Swimming Resolutions?

500 free: 4:30!

RE: 2009 Swimming New Years Resolutions

so how's everyone getting on?
I've reduced my 50m time from 26.20 to 26.03 - still 1.04 secs from a 24.
And my 100m from 59.40 to 58.75. This felt really comfortable and I was annoyed I didn't push harder. I think I'll change my target to a 56. Now!!
Keep up the good work guys.

RE: 2009 Swimming New Years Resolutions

I accomplished my resolution. tjrpatt and pwbrundage, you were right: I have had much worse swimming experiences than the 200 fly (the 50 breaststroke for instance, and the 100 IM). Several people cautioned me that I could not take the first 100 too easy, so I didn't really work at all until the last 50, when I was sure I would finish. I think I will try it again.

Way to go! I do think the 200 fly can be a fun event if you play around with pacing and swim it smart. Sounds like you did.

RE: 2009 Swimming New Years Resolutions

Mine is pretty simple.... to start, again.

Good job on doing the 200 fly. See, you want to do it again. Hope you enjoy your LCM 200 fly.
