There used to be an online club called the Butternuts, for people who had done at least 500 continuous meters of 'fly. I tried to find it yesterday and just got a whole bunch of horticultural sites about walnut trees.

A Chicago swimmer typically does the 5k Big Shoulders swim all butterfly. I'll see if I can find his Web site, then you can ask him many questions!

Not if it's a dolphin kick. I'm pretty sure you could dolphin kick an entire fly race without ever taking a single arm pull and be legal (as long as you surfaced before the 15m mark off each wall).

RE: What's the longest butterfly race you could swim?

Anything over 75 yards becomes "survival fly" for me.

RE: What's the longest butterfly race you could swim?

Used to be a pretty good flyer when I was a kid. Straight from the USMS Rule book:

101.3.3 Kick—All up and down movements of the legs and feet must be simultaneous. The position of the legs or the feet need not be on the same level, but they shall not alternate in relation to each other. The breaststroke or whip kick may be used exclusively or interchangeably with the dolphin kick while doing the butterfly stroke at any time during the race. Only one breaststroke or whip kick is permitted per arm pull, except that a single breaststroke or whip kick is permitted prior to the turn and the finish without an arm pull. After the start and after each turn, a single breaststroke or whip kick is permitted prior to the first arm pull. A scissors kicking movement is not permitted.

RE: What's the longest butterfly race you could swim?

I saw a dude frog kicking during a 100 fly this weekend...
