I had the same problem, and i asked swimoutlet about it, they said the bust-size is the european size, so if a swimsuit says 36" in bustsize, then its about a size 36. I havent ordered yet, so i have no experience with it myself yet.

depends on the maker. i have some european arena suits. i wear speedo 30 now a 32 -i think they have changed sizing. for uk suits a 30 is pretty equal to a 30 US size. i can wear 36 french or german and 40 or 42 italian. yikes, it is complicated. i never go by the chest or hip size in the swim catalogues.

Here are some sizing charts: www.swim-shop.com/.../arena_suit_sizing.php Note that for women's suits in the U.S., there are a couple of different sizing systems. One system follows women's dress sizes: 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, etc. Suits sized in this manner typically seem to be "fashion" swimsuits. The second system, which is used by Speedo, Tyr, and others, is based on chest size: 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, etc. The sizing charts in the link above show both systems.
