Nope. Daddy doesn't but, my husband does and he doesn't like Brits that make fun of Southerners all the time....so you better just watch out. Hey, just remember who helped fund your civil war effort now...I only start when the stereotypes get flung at me.

Getting an award and standing on a podium is embarassing. Imagine if 50,000,000 of your country men were watching. Put him in a pool he handles the nerves marvelously, put him on a podium not so much. The reaction (lauging) is a release of nerves.

I saw it and it bothered me too. During the awards ceremony for either the 400 FR or MR ( I can't remember which one) Michael and Ryan were talking and laughing a lot during the National Anthem.It seemed very disrespectful to me. I've never seen any other athlete do that during the playing of our anthem during a medal ceremony. I was disappointed. Ok...bring on the insults. Beth, go back and watch it again. If memory serves me correctly, they did that once the anthem got messed up and everyone realized it wasn't going to continue. During the playing, both Michael and Ryan smiled and were quiet, but once it got screwy, they and everyone else got a laugh out of it that the anthem wasn't going to finish.

Some people just like to gripe. The anthem at the 400IM ceremony was hosed up...I'd have laughed made a comment to my team-mate, too. I don't normally sing the anthem. One, I don't sing well and I spent 20 years standing at attention saluting the flag and the anthem. As a retired USAF MSgt, the fact that Michael and most other American athletes don't "sing" the anthem doesn't bother me a bit. I appreciate the fact that they are usually quiet and respectful after giving their best efforts.

This is part of why I think the anthem's should go...you've got the flags, the team uniforms and all that. Hoist the cloth and then let the people enjoy themselves. I think it's appropriate to be happy when your anthem is played. That's what soldiers die for, the life and liberty of others. Memorial/Veterans/Rememberance day are the days to stand back and think deep. IMHO. Obviously any sign of intended disrespect during an anthem is seriously tacky. Could be worse: you get morons booing the opposing team's anthems at international football matches all over the place.

My point was simply to say that I can understand why others may have had a problem with his cutting up. Understood. Phelps represented the country well. I have no complaints. I agree. He acquitted himself well.

Yes, it is my opinion, and it is your opinion that it most likely did not cross his mind. It could have. My point was simply to say that I can understand why others may have had a problem with his cutting up. Phelps represented the country well. I have no complaints.

The women's eight rowing medal ceremony was pretty cool. At the start a few were mouthing/whispering the words to the national anthem, more joined in, by the end the whole team was singing. I thought that was cute - when the entire team was belting it out - I got goosebumps, they were having so much fun! As for Phelpsie... some athletes sing their anthem, some don't. Do you think it's a macho thing? But, the 400 IM anthem was screwed up... big time - the beginning seemed to be cut off, it repeated, and then ended early. I would probably giggle too.

Real Americans would have been text messaging. Nobody really sings along in this country anyway, from my experiences. With a few noted exceptions it's always some artist doing there worst with it and thinking they're really being great. The only crowd participation is the cheering near the end. I like one of our local meets where the diector says everyone will sing it together...normally; not one person jazzing it up. (No reference to Jazz Hands). I say leave the boys alone.

The letter writer was from Valparaiso, Indiana (Valpo). I believe the Tribune tries to publish letters from the provinces as a way of keeping its market broad. Wonder what Sam Zell, the owner, who is no fool, would have to say about that letter. How about people who blubber and rub their eyes during the national anthem? Or sneeze? Can't they wait til after?

I don't think it was worth it for the person to write in to the paper complaining about Phelps, but at the same time I don't think it was dumb either. Alot of lives have been lost fighting for our coutry. When the National Anthem is played, it is a time to remember those that lost their lives fighting to protect what America stands for. I'm not bent out of shape about Phelps laughing but I can see how some might be.

The Tribune was out of line with that story. The writer was just looking for attention with that article.
