No infamy here, IMO. I agree, hundreths of a second on the touch pads happen all the time. But it was a very unusual finish which will talked about for years to come. If it weren't for the timing system and photo finish, there's no question that everyone (including the officials) would have said Cavic won. And this might have been the event that changed his medal count. BTW I was rooting for MP. :rolleyes: But I do not suffer from Phelps-mania. My daughters might. He's right up there with the Jonas brothers.

I don't understand. I guess if you're a big Cavic fan you get to think something unfair happened. I'm sure there are the conspiracy theorists. As Jeff points out, there are losses by .01 via the touchpads in every meet all over the world. Is this race special for some reason? Just because you're tired of the Phelps-mania??? No infamy here, IMO. We need to track down and interview the third stroke and turn judge who was on the grassy knoll.... :D

Before the days of touch pads...things like this fell into hands of the officials. And as we were all led to believe from the visual, Phelps would have been number two. This gold medal victory was bought to you by Omega. That race (and the finish) will live in infamy. I don't understand. I guess if you're a big Cavic fan you get to think something unfair happened. As much as i think of phelps as being a great swimmer. That race was so cavcis Agreed, it looked like Phelps was swimming the 200 with how slow he took it out.

I've been watching the underwater replays. It looks simultaneous. It's impossible to distinguish with the naked eye. And that's why electronic timing is actually measured to the 1/1000th although results are displayed and recorded in the (e-?)books only to the 1/100th. Therefore, electronically (faulty pads or not) Phelps won by a whopping 10/1000th of a second.

I've been watching the underwater replays. It looks simultaneous. It's impossible to distinguish with the naked eye. It's moot anyhow now, the tape back ups prove the pads got it as it happened. I guess as was mentioned there has to be certain amount of pressure so that's what's needed to win--you have to do more than brush them. Real tight though, can you imagine making that call without the technology?

pretty low class of bottom to file protest. i would have looked at the video to confirm but that should be enough. it's clear from the video phelps' finger flex upward first (from the super-slow-mo underwater shot). people who think cavic won...come on. there are two explanations: 1) cavic's touchpad is faulty. if it didn't work, it would most likely not even register a touch. it's clear from the video that the difference between phelps and cavic is less than 5 hundredths. so is he going to argue that the pad is off by 1-2 hundredths? the pads are calibrated to a much greater precision than this. 2) the only other explanation is that the results were "rigged". after careful thought it should be clear that "rigging" the results under the constraints of a) getting the "rigged" results to match close enough to viewers' perceptions and b) within the 1 second it takes to get the results from the pads to the scoreboard would require some serious crystal-ball vision. come on now. i thought the us womens' gymnastics teams protests were lame, but this really takes the cake. if you're going to come up with a conspiracy theory at least make one about something that's so cut and dry that its easily disproved

Cavic's finish was "amateurish". He glided in (OK. His hands were too close for attempting an extra .5 or .3 or whatever-th of a stroke, but his legs were straight. I didn't notice even an attempt at a kick or .5 an amplitude kick.

Saw the underwater replay on my satellite feed. It did look like Phelps may have got him because Cavic's hands to the wall looked glacial compared to Michael's slamming the wall. I could swear at last year's Worlds that Crocker touched first. Maybe it's a conspiracy. :thhbbb:

Mighty close. I thought the Serb won it. Just saw the replay I stll don't know. It looked like the Serb was on the wall first. The Serbs say the pads were faulty.

ya it's kind of disappointing that they're taking that step. i don't really see how you can say that the touchpad is biased against you. but it was so close i personally would probably like to see it frame by frame underwater. maybe they need to file the paperwork now just in case they find anything on the video. oh well.

I think there was some sort of miracle that slowed Cavic down there, he should've had that victory, especially with Phelps blowing his finish that badly... I guess he is just fated to be the greatest olympian of all time...

He really broke the #1 rule of finishing a race. Don't ever, EVER, finish with a half stroke. Stretch the arm out and kick it in.

my heart was popping out of my chest, I'm still shaking from watching that, he is insane, just the amount of events he swam and just the level of competition, theyre were guys who specialized in just certain events and he still beat them, unbelievable

Hey, Warren, here's something for you: Duje Draganja lost the gold in the 50 free by .01 to Gary Hall Jr. If Croatia had protested the result, would you have supported it, believing that no Race Club swimmer ever loses a race, or is your Race Club bias too strong to simply understand that Phelps simply touched the wall .01 ahead of Cavic? Cavic has been around a long time. Surely he's lost races by .01 before. I've lost major races by that much, and I simply knew that what I saw on the scoreboard was reality. That's the nature of swimming. It's as objective as it gets. The touchpads ... do ... not ... lie. And if it wasn't Cavic that initiated the protest, the people who did certainly know that races can be won and lost in the Olympics by .01. They should have been happy to know that Cavic was to be remembered as the man who almost derailed the Phelps train. But with this protest, all that has happened is that Cavic and Serbia have now been cast in a bad light. I understand if Cavic is mad. Eamon Sullivan was mad that he lost the 100 free, but he didn't go running to the officials to claim the wall in his lane was 1 millimeter further than Bernard's. If Cavic had been the gracious silver medalist, he would be revered and celebrated for many years. Biographies of Phelps would not be complete without celebrating the swim. But now, if his name is in a book about Phelps, I can't imagine it will be very positive. No one else was closer to Phelps in an individual race. I have nothing but the utmost respect for the Race Club. Gary Hall Sr. and Jr. are good friends. I do hope Cavic's actions don't hurt their reputation.
