with other great swimmers
for a great coach
in a great facility

since shanteau arrived in Austin as an IMer
then in the 200 LCM ***
he dropped from 2:17 to 2:10, giving him a way better chance than trying to edge out phelps and lochte in the IMs

last year spann was 2:14, he made phenominal improvements,
Randy Reese coached him in high school, Bowman coached him at Michigan then Eddie coached him when he transferred to UT

Many top recruits come to Austin to represent UT and be coached by Eddie, they like it and stay after they graduate

Many more TXLA swimmers didn't make the US Olympic Team

Also don't discount UT's womens program
they have some excellent recruits coming in

UT's women's program has been a laggard - but next fall Hersey, Gingrich, and Riefenstahl arrive on campus. They will suddenly improve dramatically.

RE: 2008 Us Olympic Team Trials - Swimming

great swimmers want to train

Matt,
Perhaps critical isn't the right word to use.

TXLA with 8/22 had 36.4% of the mens team. The four teams with 2+ qualifiers had 15 swimmers, 68% of the team. It is a matter of numbers and stats.

11 clubs qualified one male swimmer for the Olympics. That doesn't tell me that it is CRITICAL to swim for TXLA if you want to go to the olympics. However, the fact that TXLA has 8 swimmers going tells me there is a high CORRELATION with that program and Olympic berths.

RE: 2008 Us Olympic Team Trials - Swimming

When you have a swimmer who was thought to be locked into an Olympic berth, and then said swimmer fails to qualify, of course he is going to get interviewed. During the comentator's remarks he said she had improved her dive. He said she had her back foot in the proper position. Dara said I worked on my dives this morning. I looked at it again and she did a very good dive.

Her Back foot was what I had been talking about ealier and pointed out that many of the swimmers had a bad rear foot placement.

RE: 2008 Us Olympic Team Trials - Swimming

I think Hansen faded in the 200 BR because he had Kitajima on his mind.He went out fast, maybe trying to get his WR back and couldn't hold it.I think if he just swam to win he would have.

Allen, you are right now. I am a Hansen supporter but, the guy who didn't make the team shouldn't have been interviewed. It was Shanteau and Spann's time in the spotlight. But, I have to say that Hansen was very composed in the interview after such a disastrous swim.

RE: 2008 Us Olympic Team Trials - Swimming

I think Hansen faded in the 200 BR because he had Kitajima on his mind.He went out fast, maybe trying to get his WR back and couldn't hold it.I think if he just swam to win he would have.

14:46, very good. Maybe it isn't too long. He does seem very inconsistent with the 1500. Then again, who wouldn't be in that race. I was just hoping that this time would be different.

Watching the 1500 makes me want to 1500 free in LC. I might have to wait until next summer. My zone Champs only have the 800 which I will sign up for. I won't be able to go to Nationals this summer. On the team roster on the US Swim site at:
www.usaswimming.org/.../U.S. Olympic Swim Team Roster.pdf

Torres is not listed for the 100 free and no one else has been added.
(this list is not error free, however e.g. Marshall listed for the 100 relay instead of the 200)

RE: 2008 Us Olympic Team Trials - Swimming

Matt,

I would probably reduce the TXLA swimmer count by one actually. Scott Spann spent the last two years swimming for Bowman and only recently moved to TXLA after Bowman left U of M. Spann did very well under Michigan. He swam for Randy Reese before he went to Michigan.

RE: 2008 Us Olympic Team Trials - Swimming

Matt,

I am inclined to believe that if those TXLA athletes trained at the MAC or for CW, they would have fared very similarly in these trials. But perhaps you are correct, TXLA is just a better program.

RE: 2008 Us Olympic Team Trials - Swimming

It is interesting that TXLA has no female qualifiers. Hayley just missed.

The interesting thing to recognize is that all the TXLA males are coached by Eddie Reese - the UT coach. I believe all of the TXLA females are coached by Randy Reese. I'm not making a statement - just an observation. TXLA had many women at the trials - they just didn't make the team. They are generally younger girls.

RE: 2008 Us Olympic Team Trials - Swimming

At first I was annoyed i'd have to fast forward through all those track & field events (plus commercials), but now i'm glad I was forced to watch our country's finest make their way to Bejing! Suddenly, you watch some of these events (and learn what they are), then you really care who makes it!

The bonus of the night: best dive award goes to that girl in the 200 (running) that totally stumbled and DOVE across the finish line to earn that 3rd place/Olympic spot - it was amazing!!! I'm going to watch more track and field from now on!!!

If you missed it, I think it was before the swim events. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Were there any Outside Smokers (actual lane 1 or 8) in swimming make the team this year?

I enjoyed the track and field competitors as well as the swimming. Majorly impressed with the speed of the 1500 meters, and the men's race in that was very interesting. I guess shoving is legal.

RE: 2008 Us Olympic Team Trials - Swimming

You forgot the fact that Rowdy Gains was falling all over himself to talk about Michael Phelps, whether it was pertinent to the situation or not. Kara Lynn may still get on the team. Emily Silver broke her hand on the finish of the 50 prelims(I think). They don't know if it will require surgery or not but if she is removed from the team, Kara Lynn will be on it in her place.

Side note...if Dara drops out of the 100 free, does that mean everyone moves up a spot?
