This is my first post on this board so here's a quick intro before my question.

Stats: Male/33/6'/175lbs/Toronto, ON area. I am new to Masters swimming/training, (4 months) but not new to the water. Lifeguard, SCUBA/freediver

RE: Quick Intro and goggle question

Well, I grew up with marks around my eyes thanks to goggles. I have a weird facial structure...My eyes are wide apart and large sockets (can't wear sweedish style without pain, the Vanquishers that people seem to love kill me eyes), so my structure is hard to fit, and then the nosepiece always digs into my nosebridge. I can actually feel a little dent on my nose from the years of swimming I've put in. However, I loved my goggles and wouldn't trade them for the world. They were comfy and would stay on every time I dove in.

Now that I've come back into swimming (took off about 5 years or so), I am having trouble finding goggles that fit well. The style I used to use have all changed their materials (ahem, Speedo). The foam on the goggles irritate my eyes and the straps are now made from silicone, which slip off my cap when I dive in. AND they no longer have the little plastic anchors to hold the strap tight, they just have little notches that are supposed to hold the goggles strap in place. It's jsut impossible for me & very irritating since I NEVER had this problem, before.

I now use whatever I find comfortable. I just go into the Kiefer store and try on all the goggles. I'm sure they hate me. I now have "practice" goggles that are comfy, but don't stay on if I dive in. I have "meet" goggles that are less comfy, but stay on much better.

Most of these answers to the goggle dilemma appear to be very o ld. I also am very frustrated with my goggles. All of them leak. Then when I try to adjust them, I spend half of my lap swimming time trying to adjust them. My dream would be to find some leak proof goggles that are easy to adjust to start with and never have to adjust again. HELP>

The answers to this question rarely change. Goggles don't change much.

I agree the first thing to do is try them on at a store. They should have some "sticktion" without using the strap. If one eye fits well on its own but not both then the nosepiece is probably the wrong size. Many goggles have adjustable nosepieces or come with multiple sizes.

I prefer silicone seals over foam, but my sons both prefer foam. The strap on Vanquishers is strong and doesn't stretch as easily. The strap on Nike goggles are more stretchy. I think Swedish style are an acquired preference and the hard plastic on my face doesn't work for me.

RE: Quick Intro and goggle question

Help! Thanks, the marks seem to be definitely less noticable when I swim in the cooler of the two pools I train in. Both 25m SC, one is 81-82F, the other is 87-88F. (I don't mind the warmer water and actually prefer it this time of year. I live in Ontario and it has been a long, cold, brutal winter....)

I made a new post in the Open Water swimming forum with more info and my plans for this summer. Looking to meet others for discussion, etc. who are also into OWS. I recently found out about all these OW events and they look awesome!! I think this just might be my niche in Masters swimming.

RE: Quick Intro and goggle question

Here's my :2cents: about the goggles:
I use the speedo "sprint" version and they seem to fit my face pretty good. I like them because they're cheap. They leave a slight ring around my right eye but it goes away after about 20 minutes. Definitely try different types as everyone's face is unique. Good luck.

I swim mid-day or in the evening, and I do use moisturizer after swimming.

I will try the different nose pieces that come with the Air Seals, and look into trying the Vanquisher's as well.

RE: Quick Intro and goggle question

I believe the Air Seals come with three different nose pieces. You might want to swap them around to see if you get a better leak proof fit before you chuck them.

Go buy some cheap Swedish goggles, they never leak. And, I'm sure some geezer on the forum will start advocating the Compys from the 1930s any second now.

RE: Quick Intro and goggle question

Hello to everyone,

I have marks for several hours after I swim. I swim at lunch and don't have to worry about puffy eyes like morning swimmers and my goggles fit pretty well. I have had good luck with a good lotion for my face. It seems that the goggle marks fade more quickly when I put on lotion after I swim.

RE: Quick Intro and goggle question

I believe the Air Seals come with three different nose pieces. Old geezer chiming in...swedish goggles are a great idea:doh: since they have no padding and will probably make more of mark on your face. Seriously, everything makes a mark at my age (loss of collagen, etc.). Maybe aquageek can recommend some good moisturizer for me. :D

RE: Quick Intro and goggle question

I like the Speedo Vanquisher's. Any ideas/tips/suggestions?? Should I shop around for a different pair? They seem to fit/work fine except for the marks. Is this just part of the sport? (No one else seems to have marks as crazy as mine though...)...

Yes, shop around for a different pair, and try to find a shop where they let you try them on. There are many different models out there for different shapes and sizes of faces. You shouldn't have to crank them super-tight if they are a good fit.
If you are swimming first thing in the morning, splash cold water on your face before leaving for the pool. Waking up with a slightly puffy face can make your goggles leave marks as well.
