I've been trying to figure out how much time (if any) a dive would shave off my times. Anybody have any idea? Say I swim the 50 in :30, what's your guess as to what

RE: Dive start versus in-water start times

There was a study a couple of years ago that showed,on average, starting from the blocks was 1 sec faster than starting from the side with a dive and that was 1 sec faster than starting in the water(or from the blocks was 2 sec faster than from in the water.)That was an average, your results may vary.

RE: Dive start versus in-water start times

subtract one second

RE: Dive start versus in-water start times

if you're doing this in practice and simply add a dive in i would say maybe 27-28.

if you then put yourself into a race with a racing suit on (assuming you wear drag in practice) i would say 26-27

My reference is my 50's in practice can be as fast as like 27ish and my fastest 50 race has been 22 high... hopefully soon to be 22 low :)

RE: Dive start versus in-water start times

Start from the pool deck you should go around 28.75-29, from a block about 28.00-28.25.

For me, I go 26.6 50m from blocks and the best I can do from a push is about 29. Part of that is that I don't hit as tight a streamline off the wall and don't SDK quite as much when I push off.

RE: Dive start versus in-water start times

You won't really know until you do it. It depends on how good your start is, whether you shave or wear a special suit, and how you usually time yourself with a pace clock. And of course we can't forget psychological factors, as aquageek mentioned in reference to me. By the way, geek, I often do about a 24 in practice and my best race is a 21. Super psych up, indeed.

RE: Dive start versus in-water start times

:28, unless you have the super psych up powers of Jazz Hands, then it would be a :27.
