Paul,
I surprised myself doing this workout. I went in to it saying that if I make 8000 yds I will be very happy. So it was a huge accomplishment for me to finish. Had alot of encouragement from the faster guys and if it was not for my lane mate, I don&#39;t think I would have finished it all. The guys always tell me on sets/intervals that I dont think I can make....you can do it, but if this is all the better you want to be then you wont try. Me being competitive, I always try and will push myself to make it. I did tell them though, IF I dont break a minute in the 100 free at our next meet, I am going to kick all their butts.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Holiday Swim Achievements, 12-24-07 to 1-6-08

Awesome job! There were 6 of us doing the workout. After we got pass the 500s, it was not that bad. The 500s were more mental than anything. The 100s and 50s went really fast.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Holiday Swim Achievements, 12-24-07 to 1-6-08

Good job Tim!

Thanks for the details, too! I&#39;d always wondered what a 100 x 100 would look like in real life. I will probably drive myself through it one of these years but agree that open water is it for the long swims.

&quot;SwimStud,&quot; great that you can feel the weight of the water! A bit of a shock -- and delight -- when that happens for the first time.

Good swims and runs in 2008!

I set my alarm again this morning, for 7:20. It went off, I was so sore, I shut it off, went back to sleep until about 8:30. Got up, and started my run around 9. It wasn&#39;t quite raining, but was very humid out, cloudy, water spritzing most of the time. Around the 8 to 9 mile mark, it started to drizzle, and felt pretty good. I ended up doing 9.62 miles (according to my iPod), overall 8:34/mile pace, about 9 sec/mile faster than my 10 mile run last Sunday.

Maybe I&#39;ll set a goal this year and finally do the La Jolla Roughwater Swim...I&#39;ve been wanting to do it for years, but never got around to it. It seems I&#39;m always traveling somewhere else right around that time, but I&#39;ll find out when it is and put it on my calendar this week.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Holiday Swim Achievements, 12-24-07 to 1-6-08

Very cool! I hope you give it a try! Let us know if you do and how it goes. Worse case, you can always stop if you must. We did 60x100 long course last year and it was not bad at all. Some were IM and Drill by groups of 10 so it went by faster with the variety.

Well I ended up doing the 100 x 100&#39;s (scy) this morning. I got a pretty good sleep last night (went to bed around 10), my alarm went off at 7:20 am, and I got up around 7:30. Had a slice of cinnamon toast with peanut butter on. I still hadn&#39;t decided if I would go yet at that point. Around 8:20, when I realized it was that late, I started to get ready. Showed up at the pool almost right at 9am (start time).

The start was a bit chaotic. Lots of people just standing around, some fast swimmers (who are much faster than me) trying to take the lane I typically swim in. Eventually, the coach told us that we had 4 more lanes in the main pool, and I went over to that side. I dove in last (4th) in the slowest lane of the 4 faster lanes. In addition to our head coach, Paul and Laura Smith helped out with coaching/motivating us along the way.

I was expecting to do a few hundred warm-up first. However, we went right into the set. The first 10 were on a 1:30 interval for my lane, not a bad pace to warm up. Then we went to a 1:40 pace, then down to 1:35, 1:30, and 1:25. After that (1/2 way) we took about a minute break. Then we went back to 1:40, then 1:35, 1:30, 1:25, and the last was supposed to be on 1:20. I don&#39;t exactly know what I did it on, I think the first 3 or 4 were 1:20, then after that it was mostly touch and go (I didn&#39;t even look at the clock, Paul kept yelling at me whenever I came in, so I just went).

General comments:
* I don&#39;t know where all these people came from!!! I swim 80%+ at the morning workout, maybe 15% noon, and 5% evening, and I don&#39;t remember seeing 1/2 or more people at any of our regular workouts.
* The people in my lane (all gals) went way too fast at the beginning. On the 1:40 interval they must have been getting 20+ sec rest per 100. Some were doing fly/back/IM, &quot;because we have so much time.&quot; I actually said something to Paul at some point that if they had so much time to chit-chat and do IM they should be in a faster lane. One flat out refused to even attempt a 1:20 interval on the last 10 (she moved to a vacant lane).
* If I had to estimate, I&#39;d say about 70% of the people who showed up finished the whole thing. Some had planned to less (like only do 5,000), some couldn&#39;t do more, some just did whatever (saw a few people doing 50s here and there).

I finished the whole thing, not exactly sure how long. We were supposed to start at 9, I think it was closer to 9:15, and Paul said it was about 11:45 when I got out (I did an easy 250 after). I had eaten at home, and brought some water with me, otherwise I didn&#39;t eat anything else until I got back home. I did take off my drag suit somewhere in the 80-85 area. I got out my pull buoy and paddles around the same time, getting them ready to use, but I ended up not using any toys.

Would I do this again? Maybe, but probably not. I did it, know I can do it now, but I&#39;d much rather do a longer open water swim, where you actually get to see something, go somewhere.

Hoping to get in my weekly long run tomorrow. We&#39;re getting a little rain (rare for the Phoenix area), and it won&#39;t take much to dissuade me from running.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Holiday Swim Achievements, 12-24-07 to 1-6-08

I took 5 secs off my 100 interval. First attempt I made 8/10 reps
Tried again last night and made all 10 with a little gas to spare.

Also trying to knock off 10 secs from my 50 interval too managed 8/10 the other day...will try again Friday...

I figured I just wasn&#39;t pushing myself hard enough. It&#39;s funny when I have a noodler ask me if I am ok because I am breathing hard...well I appreciate the concern but I told him (nicely) fitness is speed of recovery back to comfortable breathing, not breathing hard after hard effort...

Another note I&#39;m all of a sudden begining to feel the &quot;weight&quot; of the water as my hand enters for the pull...almost like the catch is telling me when to pull...I could be doing something wrong but it feels so right...now that would be a first

Anyone care to post the ingenious sets devised by coaches for this special, once-a-year time?

On New Year&#39;s Day our coach holds a pizza party at our pool. It&#39;s open to all of the Masters swimmers and their families. We swim and go off the diving boards, eat pizza for lunch, then play in the pool some more. So our only &quot;sets&quot; consisted of the belly-flop contest, the cannonball contest, and the &quot;how-many-stacked-up-kickboards-can-you-stand-on-in-the-water&quot; contest.

First off, the week before Christmas the pool I usually swim in started to get cold. Apparently the filter and heat were turned off so maintenance could be donw. We contined to have workout until Thursday the 20th, but by then I&#39;d say the temp was down to about 70. You definitely didn&#39;t want to stand around too long! After that my team was off until yesterday. At least that was the plan. I got an email yesterday that the pool is still down for repairs. I really hope they get it fixed soon! The pool was built in 1938 and maintenance seems to be an increasing issue. Anyway, I&#39;ve gotten in a decent amount, but definitely less than usual. The last couple weeks I&#39;ve managed about 15K yards per week whereas I usually shoot for 20K. Tennessee Tumble
Swim freestyle but anytime you are inside the flags area you dive down, swim free underwater, do a flip turn fully submerged, and push off past the flags all while underwater. It&#39;s a bit of a lungbuster until you get used to it.

That set is NOT for the faint of heart - fins or not!! Yea. Getting lapped is an experience. Way to go (S)he-Man! What an awesome 200 fly!

For me, unlike Thanksgiving, the holidays were a swimming disaster. Got sick xmas eve and stayed that way for a good 10 days with no swimming. Went swimming today. After 2 weeks of taper and 2 weeks of sickness, absolutely no strength or endurance left. Blech. Only further cements my hatred of tapering!

(Kristina: I do see a chiro. But only about 2x a month unless the shoulder&#39;s bad. It&#39;s impossible to resist the massive bacteria and viruses from children.)<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Holiday Swim Achievements, 12-24-07 to 1-6-08

Thanks Geek and Bill.

It&#39;s a bit of a lungbuster until you get used to it.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Holiday Swim Achievements, 12-24-07 to 1-6-08

(S)he-Man - that&#39;s really impressive, well done.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Holiday Swim Achievements, 12-24-07 to 1-6-08

I swam LCM on New Year&#39;s eve in the lanes next to the teenagers who did 9600 meters.....crazy. Just curious, how old are the people in your lane?

Thanks. It was really great to get a nice complement from Coach Chris Davis after the workout. The 3 boys were ages 15 to 17. Most of the kids on the Nat team are ages 15 to 18.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Holiday Swim Achievements, 12-24-07 to 1-6-08

Guh.

I did sets like that short course last week and I had to add fins to keep up with the kids. Actually it was more like trying not to get lapped by the kids.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Holiday Swim Achievements, 12-24-07 to 1-6-08

Today, December 31, was the first day for most of the New Year&#39;s Day swims. Anyone care to post the ingenious sets devised by coaches for this special, once-a-year time?

Happy New Year to the forumites! Lift a glass to coaches, swim buddies, and those who wash the towels.
