What have you been procrastinating?

Mine are to:
1) lose weight (go from 215 to 205 or better) and
2) do a few more SDK&#39;s on hard swims when I&#39;m tired

What are yours?

I am a 58 year old woman who swims for fitness and over the past 5 years since I began to swim again it has made a huge impact on my fitness level, success on losing weight and how I look and feel.
My goal for 2008 are to lose the last 10 pounds, improve my very, very slow flutter kick, improve my free style speed, and put more variety in my swim workout which generally lasts 90 mins.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: 2008 Swimming New Years Resolutions

Hi &quot;carol58,&quot;

For variety in workouts, have you looked at any of the workouts posted in the &quot;Workouts&quot; forum, by USMS coaches? They do keep things interesting by changing what one does from day to day, and at least two coaches posting daily in 2007 (possibly all three) gave variations for different levels of swimmer. I&#39;m looking forward to postings from the three new 2008 coaches!

You can post questions in the &quot;ask ande&quot; thread, or start your own thread with a question. And you may be far more representative of readers here than you imagine!

Good luck! Those are good goals to have.

Don&#39;t stop! (Er, I think you have through the first week of New Year to exchange your resolution for a different one....)

I&#39;d like to do the Lake Champlain swim once in my life. Do you have an update on your Web site?

Thanks, VB

Yeah, not exchanging my resolution except and I want to swim smarter this year, no more 1000s after masters practice. I&#39;ve been so focused on quality rather than quantity and honeslty am exhausted after most 1.5 hour practices where as I used to conserve energy during practice and not work as hard because I would want to add on after practice. 8 x 1000 after practice isn&#39;t going to help me accomplish my swimming goals for the 100 &amp; 200 back this year.

I hope to do Lake Champlain again this year. It was an incredible swim. I did post a write up on my blog... <a href="http://julieoplinger.blogspot.com/2007/08/lake-champlain-swim-8-miles-from-new.html">julieoplinger.blogspot.com/.../lake-champlain-swim-8-miles-from-new.html</a> and there are other great stories from people here on the forum.

Yep, I resolved to be on time to practices (pretty mundane, I know). I&#39;m 0 for 5 so far. But I only missed 150yd this morning -- getting better!

1st) like a few of you I figure the less of me the better...so I want to drop a few pounds....25 to be exact..of course that means that I might actually have to cook a few things now and again and not rely on the microwave as much

2nd) I want to do all 5 postal events again this year..they are rather addicting. And I am THNKING about going to the dark side of swimming and want to do an:shakeshead: OPEN water event unless enough of you talk me out of it.

3rd) I am going to do ALL the events at least once...in a meet and that even means the dreaded 200 FLY...:drown::help:

and finally my focus events this year are the ---200breast where I want to finally break 2:55 the 400 IM where I want to break the 6min mark and I think that I am going to change it up a bit because I have been trying for :frustrated: AGES to break the 22min in the 1650 without luck so I am going to look at the 1000 free this year and attempt to break the 13min mark instead.:applaud:<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: 2008 Swimming New Years Resolutions

Yer welcum any time.

Back on track: I suppose my swimming resolution is a general one (bec. I already swim every day and will not ever be a meet swimmer): push my own comfort level in total yardage and amount of sprint yardage included, and add something for a more well-rounded fitness. Possibly yoga.

&quot;funkyfish,&quot; if you have a taste for long-distance swimming (not all do), 8000 yds sounds like a wonderful goal. I&#39;m trying to do 3000-3500 twice a week, gradually pushing up the yardage --slowly! -- on occasional longer swims. Maybe I&#39;ll add 8000 yds as a semi-goal for 2008 (next year 9000 yds?) and meet you in the cyberpool!

From Nancy Clark, a registered dietitian, author, and sports nutritionist:

1) Don&#39;t focus on dieting. Focus on eating. If you are on a strict diet and get too hungry, you are more likely to overeat, especially in the evening. Rather than dieting by day and blowing it by night, try fueling adequately by day and dieting by night. Eat every four hours or so, and make sure to eat a &quot;second lunch&quot; - think of it as another meal rather than a snack - in the midafternoon to keep your energy up and make you less hungry in the evening. Try a yogurt with granola and fruit, peanut butter on graham crackers with a decaf latte, or even a slice or two of pizza.

2) Budget your food as you do your money. A rough guideline for daily caloric intake: Multiply your ideal body weight by 15 (i.e., 1,800 calories if you want to weigh 120 pounds) if you&#39;re moderately active; add a few hundred more calories if you&#39;re very active. Divide those calories out across the day to keep yourself well fed.

3) Eat three different foods at every meal. Don&#39;t eat a scoop of tuna for lunch - eat tuna on a roll with a salad.

4) Eating will not solve emotional problems. Many people eat to make themselves feel better when they&#39;re upset. It works in the short run; certain foods can temporarily boost mood. But in the long run, you&#39;ll have the same emotional problems - plus the extra weight.

5) Don&#39;t drink too many calories. It&#39;s easy to drink calories without noticing: that eggnog latte at Starbucks has nearly as many calories as a Big Mac. It&#39;s OK to have one as an occasional treat, but consider it a meal, not a drink.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: 2008 Swimming New Years Resolutions

I have decided my resolution for 2008 will be to stop making fun of slow fitness swimmers.

So annoying. . .
:wiggle:

Somehow figure out how to beat the swimmers who cheat in practice.
i.e., those who love wearing the paddles, fins, flotation devices, wetsuits, small craft engines, or some combination thereof.
