My issue is low back tightness that is causing muscle cramping in my low back and legs when I do short axis strokes and not being afraid of swimming the 100 Fly.

I found that if you are doing the correct arm motion the legs will do what they are suppossed to do. Just think two kicks from the shoulders and be flexible.

I think most of the people here do not enjoy swimming a 100 fly and think it is all to do with the legs. Think clean entry clean exit of you arms, don't let the legs clear the water make sure they stay in the water.

RE: Paul's swimming blog

Paul, how is your BR feeling when you swim?

It's not worth dreading an event or dreading a meet. You can swim the 50s and the 100 free without much base. But the 100 fly would be sure death without any training, at least IMHO. There's plenty of meets to swim it at.

I want to swim it but I also don't want to fight being on the edge of low back and leg cramps while doing it. And if I can't do repeats of 25 fly then I'm pretty sure 100 Fly is out. Yesterday morning was more of the same, short axis wasn't working. Actually made it to the pool for practice today and I was feeling it.

14 Sep 2008

SCM with team

300 swim, 100 drill, 50 moderate, 100 kick, 150 pull

4x50 Fly on 1:00 - drill down, swim back - low back was bothering me on this. I have finally clued into the fact that I osciilate my shoulders too high and too low so that is contributing to the low back stress.
3x200 Free on 3:30
50 EZ
3x100 IM on 1:45 - tried to do fly, couldn't, did back instead but on the second rep, back wasn't happy with *** either, did the last one back-back-back-free
R 1:00
3x100 Free on 1:40
4x50 Choice on 1:00 - drill down, swim back - did backstroke
4x75 Free descend on 1:30 - really tried to nail this set, 1:01, :58, :56, :50
50 EZ

Have to smooth out my fly or my back is just gonna kill me. Really worried about my 100y Fly in 2 weeks. If it is still a problem after Tuesday, I think I will have to try and change events.

RE: Paul's swimming blog

Good Job Paul. :bliss:

Good job with your rankings. That is really good because your age group is probably the fastest male age group overall. 35-39 and 45-49 are right up there too.

RE: Paul's swimming blog

12 Sep 2008

Been really struggling to get up in the morning, hence I have not been in the pool since Sunday.

Yoga - 90 minutes.

Yoga after work is a completely different experience than yoga first thing in the morning. I really struggled to control my breathing. I did make it 2 poses later before I had to sit so I guess that's a good thing. Felt good after class. Not sure if things are getting easier or not but will keep at it.

RE: Paul's swimming blog

Thanks Swimmy. Bikram Yoga for 90 minutes. Body was still feeling the massage but I got thru the entire class. Sweated buckets. Need to get to class at least twice this week, hopefully three times.

Paul-
I used to do Bikram until I had a back injury. When I tried to get back into it, I noticed that it really irritated my lower back. Since stopping Bikram, I've had little or no back problems. Other forms of yoga do not seem to bother me.

Just wondering if you've noticed more issues with your back since staring Bikram??
