Or maybe everyone on this board continues to scare people into thinking you'll end up in hell if you swim breaststroke outside of the IM. actually, you're going to end up in hell if you swim backstorke outside of IM. :D

Glenn, thanks a lot for the post. I used the top 10 results as a benchmark to my goals. I made a correlation analysis of the 35-39 years results of 2007 with the world records of non-master swimmers. One conclusion is: the worst performance of 35-39 years masters group is breaststroke (compared to the world-class swimmers). I think masters can not tolerate to force their knees due to risk of injury.

But I gave it a whirl at LC zones this summer and I didn't grow horns. Mr. Stark has even persuaded me to swim the 50 *** at my next meet in SCM. So if I go to hell, it's his fault.

Sometimes, if you just show up and swim, you get top ten - as evidenced by my showing this year... and how ironic is it, that the guy who placed ahead of me in the 800 free swims for a team with the same abbreviation as my gf's nickname... moo!

No one offered 800 free that I can remember. Uhhh, no one offered the 800? There was the 800/1500 meet in July... And you didn't sign up for it at zones (remember, Dana and Rich swam it?).

You could have had more. Did you look at the times for the 200 free? My time last year would have made it. I wish I hadn't "mailed" that one in at the zone meet. :cry: Kevin I was the same way with the 800 free and 200 br. If I had swam them once I would have had 3 this year instead of just 1. But my wrist was so bad that I didn't do *** much and no one offered 800 free that I can remember. Next year!!! Alison

Back to the Top Ten, though. So far I have three swims in the top ten for long course. That's pretty exciting for me since I've never had more than one top ten swim per course per season before! hornHead: FINA does not have a provision against this like they do in Swimming. In Masters you can have as many registrations as you want in as many countries as you want. Its sounds strange, but until this provision is changed, you will see this a lot. That is not my understanding, unless something has recently changed. You cannot have Masters membership in more than country at a time. The way I understood it is that you must be a member of your federation where you live, but if your country doesn't have a FINA member federation, then you can join another country's federation.

A National record would imply the record holder is at least a resident of the U.S. If you look in Appendix A of the rules book the records clearly say "USMS record." To drag this out even more Kirk: Is there a separate category called Master's National Records? I didn't think so & routinely interchange USMS Record and Master's National Record (or just national record when the context is clearly about master's swimming) in my conversations and writings. If there is a real, separate, category called US Master's National records, that are reserved just for US citizens, then I should be more careful in my description. In the non-master's context, a National Record would clearly mean something else...

Isn't it the same principle as NCAA? Foreigners can hold the NCAA record...but they don't necessarily hold the "American" record.

Is it technically the national record or the USMS record? That would be extremely odd if a non-US citizen could hold a national record by virtue of usms membership ... I can see the usms record, encourages more people to compete, consistent with the mission statement, but not the other. Or maybe there is just no distinction between usms records and usms national records?
