I think body builders have probably done this for a long time, but I hadn't heard of it for other sports. On the surface it makes sense, to tailor your diet to go with where you are in your training cycle, but I haven't done any research on it.

RE: Periodization Plan

I learned this word recently while reading up on strength training. I've never given much thought to the swimming workouts through a season, I just do what the coach says. Apart from the taper, it pretty much seems the same.

Not everyone in any given masters club competes in meets so I'm wondering how widely used this is in the masters world. The coach where I swim already has his hands full with three different speeds and intervals, let alone keeping track of who is and is not swimming in meets or triathlons.

Of course I also have the opportunity to apply it in other training I do (weightlifting and various dry land cardio activities)

I glanced at this article and I can't wait to get home tonight and read it more carefully. Just what I am looking for. I also have Olbrechts book en route through a contact in Holland. I will keep you posted.
Thanks

Taking you from the macro level of season planning and drilling down all the way to sets to use for planning workouts. The best, most specific reference for this that there is.

RE: Periodization Plan

Spudfin when I want to check out a few things I use this site on a regular basis. Most of their stuff can be easily changed to meet swimming only criteria. Although some of the stuff is not what I believe but it is very adaptable. www.pponline.co.uk/.../0147b.htm One thing I did not like when it comes to swimming technique they say to cup the hand slightly. I would like a better explanation then that.

RE: Periodization Plan

Hi. If you are looking for a coach to help you with your periodization plan you may want to try posting the job at the following site www.clubswim.com/jobs.asp . Good luck!

RE: Periodization Plan

If you like to read about training, read "Periodization of Training for Sport" by Tudor Bompa. Check him out on Wikipedia. I used his models for another sport-the Firefighter Combat Challenge, and the program worked well. I have just returned to masters after a 25 year layoff and will probably try to build myself a new periodization program for swimming.

RE: Periodization Plan

Check here at USA swimming for a start (if you haven't already):

You can even find a sample plan for Michael Phelps!

Good luck keeping up with his yardage, though:notworthy:

I am quite new to swimming and have been reading about periodization training plans. I understand the general concepts and would like to give it a try over the next year. Can anyone direct me to a resource that will help be with the nuts and bolts of putting a specific plan together. Most of the trainers in my area can do it for triathletes but most don't have much specific swimming experience. I would even be willing to pay a knowledgeable coach to help me through the first year.
Thanks
