Kirk, I will be training for LCM zones and that will be my time for you. I wouldn't sweat though, this one was 34 something...LOL
The 100 FR was abandoned because of time constraints.

RE: Grudge Races, Part 2

Kirk, I will be training for LCM zones and that will be my time for you. Here was the work out. It was a bit more than I wanted to do but went anyway figuring I could get out early if things didn't feel right.

Long course meters - Less turns and probably better on my back.
600 warm up Every 3rd non free. I did EZ backstroke.

3 rounds straight through
2 X 100 on 1:40 Desc. 1-2
2 X 50 Kick on 1:30 Desc. 1-2 (kicking was tough and I could feel back back tighten up so I took it easy and mixed in breaststroke. Good thing for the 1:30 interval!

Main set.
6 X 150 on 2:40
100 easy
4 X 150 on 2:30
100 Easy
2 X 150 on 2:20
100 easy

I pretty much kept the same pace for all of the 150's. A smooth 1:58-2:00. Although the last two I went a little bit faster.

200 warm down.

I felt little stiff when I was done so I jumped in the jacuzzi and then iced it at home.

The best thing is that I felt better at night. Still had to loosen up my back so I could get out of bed to use the restroom but it took less time and I felt like I got a better nights sleep.

So hopefully this means I'm on the road to recovery.

Tonights work out is 4000 yards and short course with some sprints at the end. I'll have to be smart about this one.

RE: Grudge Races, Part 2

In my experience the best remedy for back pain is movement. About once a year I get a back pain attack that nearly immobilizes me and I wind up crawling around the house for a day or so. The more I force myself to walk, regadless of how hunched over and awkward it might be, the sooner I get better. I have been down the MD path getting muscle relaxers and that proved completely useless. I also tried visiting a chiropractor and that visit scared me half to death...won't be going again. Best of luck to you.

RE: Grudge Races, Part 2

Yeah I wish there was something more specific. In the mean time, I'm definitely doing some stretching and then ice/heat in the evenings. And I'm taking ibuprofen and a muscle relaxer before bed as my doc recommended/prescribed. But so far that has just taken the edge off of the pain. I don't think it is getting any better, yet.

Stud, are you getting in the pool and doing some easy swimming with your back or are you just resting it?

I've seen Mr. Fort with the exact same symptoms as Kevin. It's no fun to crawl on the floor. Muscle relaxers don't do jack for him either. The only thing that eases the pain and spasming is a steroid pack.

I would go heat to relax and then ice to reduce inflammation. I used to hottub and feel great but wake up feeling even more stiff and immobile. When I use ice after heat that problem goes away. I also use ice outright--so please try both.

I'm going with ice. Spasms may reflect inflammation. Heat makes inflammation worse. Hot tubs or heat feels great temporarily. But ice is the best for inflammation. And steroids. Everyone I know with a bad back flare up or spasms, including Mr. Fort and friends, is usually given a steroid pack.

I hope you're OK! I wish your doc had had something more specific to say. If it gets worse, go back as planned or get a second opinion. Seems like you need some more specific advice. Don't know about the location of pain ... That's different. But it could be impingement or a herniated disc or something. Don't mess around with it!

RE: Grudge Races, Part 2

Everyone I know with a bad back flare up or spasms, including Mr. Fort and friends, is usually given a steroid pack.

Kevin
My back issues relate to 3 bad discs and tight hamstrings...through swimming the impact of spasms has really been redueced to minor strain/tightness. It's tough to say what to do until you know what's going on. Heat, stretch, and then ice is probably a safe thing to do. I've found that I can swim with my back spasm and it's relaxing b/c the water does more to support you an let some muscles relax. If you're in painful spasm don't swim hard.
My back went Friday AM. I still went into the theme park and had a good day without too much pain...only felt my back upon rising out of a chair. By Sunday I was fine.
Before swimming I'd be down for a day and then hobbling for a week.

Go swim and feel yourself...if it hurts stop (I know, "duh!") if not keep going...I used bad back time to work on lenthening the stroke rather than speed. I avoid flips when back is tight too.

RE: Grudge Races, Part 2

You have a heating pad?

He said its not stones as far as he can tell (from a urine test). He thinks they are muscle spasms and prescribed something to help me sleep and to call him if it doesn't get better with in a week and so he can run more tests.

I've hurt my back before and this feels way different. This started out feeling like my kidneys hurt (or at least that general area) and its been getting progressively worse to the point of my back feeling like it was cramping up at the base of my ribs. And it only happens at night. During the day I'm fine.

My doctor's appointment is in an hour, so I hope he can shed some light on this. And more importantly avoid a repeat of last night.

hope it's muscular and not stones...that can be like what you're describing too..especially if it's more when you lie down. Fingers crossed for you.
