I remember shadowing all the 15-18 year olds when I was that age not so long ago. I tried to do everything they did. Walk, talk, prerace... everything. I wouldn't rule out the possibility that at the very least a seed gets planted.

Honestly, I'd laugh if I saw you guys do that. But I think you can think of other things to do. Find a women's suit and bathing cap (one with the 3d flowers and strap) in the lost and found and swim a race with that. I'd be lying if I advised against a conspicious mooning of someone underwater. :mooning: my senior year of HS, we had a senior relay who tag-teamed a free relay with a Senior balloon. :groovy:

RE: switching lanes in a race

I swam drunk in the Med once...to rescue a drowning air matress.

While running in the Philly marathon, I was having a bit of a struggle... you know... you get pain in one spot, and that pain invites all its friends in, and after a while, I begin to feel as if I've had too many beers the night before... when I come upon guys giving out cups of beer. Normally I won't touch the stuff while racing, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Beer? YES! and I grabbed some when I passed the guys on the way back. I don't think I ran any better (and fortunately, there were no lanes to switch, but I was careful not ot zigzag back and forth on the street too much)--but I sure felt better! :drink:

Read an article recently about the guy who swam the Amazon... says he drank about a bottle of wine per day... helped him swim more relaxed. Hmmmm.... wonder if he switched lanes a lot. ;)

RE: switching lanes in a race

This is somewhat embarrassing, but have been guilty of swimming in three lanes during a 400 im about 10 years ago. Doing so accidentally is not illegal as long as you don't interfere. If you do so intentionally, and the referee believes it was intentional, then the referee has every right to disqualify you for unsportsmanlike conduct.

And in a summer league meet? Please. The net effect of that is you get all of the 10 and under kids seeing it happen, think it's a great and funny idea, and then they all start doing it.

Just to clear things up, I'm not going to be the one doing it, its one of my friends on another team. I won't be present for it either becasue we don't swim them this season.

Seems as if it would actually be a disadvantage to the lane changing swimmer, since the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. I can see only one possible exception: Swimmer A (lane changer) has been assigned to share a lane in a race. Swimmer B was supposed to swim in the next lane over but unexpected business (some meeting or other about lane changing rules, no doubt) prevented him/her from participating in the race, leaving the lane empty. In Swimmer B's absence, Swimmer A sees the opportunity to enjoy a lane to him/herself. (Of course, Swimmer C, A's lane mate might have the same idea about the empty lane, making the matter more complicated, but that's why Swimmer B is off at this meeting about rules.) :joker:

RE: switching lanes in a race

One would either have to be very fast or very slow with respect to the swimmer in his nearby lane. As in, passing mid-lap, moving to his lane, making your turn in his lane, and then returning to your lane. I think it would be a hoot! Be sure the swimmer whose lane you will be visiting is not some hot head who will want to strangle you with his goggle straps when he gets out of the water. In fact, the person should be made aware of it pre-race.

RE: switching lanes in a race

Often the summer leagues have their own rule books.
