Does anyone know why there are no 18-24 age groups for worlds? I would like to go if there was and I could get enough money for the trip.

When is the Austin meet next year? The Austin meet is the first weekend in May. I believe the meet is Thursday thru Sunday. Leo

FINA does not recognize the 18-24 age group. The US has proposed this addition but it has not been accepted. Leo

Yeah, this was a tough decision. Once I took into consideration the time zone difference, flight and hotel cost, time required, etc., I had second thoughts. I know I shouldn't feel this way, but I would feel so much pressure to perform at super human levels to offset the huge cost and time investment in the trip that I think I may just focus on SCY Nats. Less pressure! i feel the same way! i would love to go to australia, but the cost of the flight alone would make me feel like if i didn't do lifetime bests (and i'm talking faster than college too), it was a waste. austin, here i come!

Hey, If they want us to cross the Atlantic, Europe and practically all of Asia,---as well as the Equator, "Order of Neptune", on the way--- they should offer us free flights (If not in First, then at least in Business, to compensate for the tedium and the jet-lag and the enforced inactivity), free non-shared accommodations down there, no entry fees and adequate per-diem and per-nox-noctis, but only for those of us who qualify. I do :groovy: but, unfortunately can't take the time off.

I'm waiting for the grand forum posters blowout too. Perth is definitely out for me. Taking 2 weeks or so off in the middle of the elementary/middle/high school year?! Yeah, that ain't happening. After flying 18 hours or whatever hellish time it takes I'd be so drugged up or drunk I'd take a week to straighten out. I hate flying. Texas will be far enough for my nerves...trust me.

Yea, I agree the times aren't that tough. I could probably qualify for 5 or 6events, and I'm not even a fast swimmer. I've been to Perth, as part of a month-long Australian vacation, and it was fantastic. This was back in 1991, and I saw few other Americans there. Every Australian was extremely friendly, even got invited to a cookout with a family who felt sorry for me. I'd rather not mix a swim meet with a vacation, when I get away I like to get away, maybe workout but keep it up in the air. When is the Austin meet next year?

I'd love to go, but doubt I will. For one thing I'd never be able to get in any long course training before the meet. That isn't really a big deal. I've done long course meets before without having trained LC with good results. I think the biggest issue is I'd probably want to go for a couple weeks to make it worthwhile and my wife doesn't like to leave home for that long. I could always go solo, but I can't really imagine taking an antipodean vacation by myself!

Much as I would love to go (I loved Australia in '88) if I had the time, money etc., having them in April, I think ensures most US and Cdn swimmers will choose their own champs of various levels to attend. Just think, with all the money saved, what a grand forum posters blowout we could have in Austin. Yes, if things work out (a very big if) I would aim to go. Wow! I know the times are in meters but even still...I could swim anything I wanted except the Fly events. I wonder if they figure it will be unaffordable for many people to go to Austrailia so they are making it easier to go swim? Getting the time off of work, travel, lodging, probably all play a factor.

They are not particularly difficult - I had to check to be sure that I was looking at the men's times and not women's times - a 14:10.00 for the 800 - Yes!!!! michael Mike, You got the correct gender but I think not the correct age group. I think your correct goal time is 11:30? :joker:

This maybe the first time I could qualify for everything except maybe a couple of the 50s. Too bad I don't think I can go.

The Perth organizing committee is trying to work with the airlines for a special rate for swimmers who will be traveling to compete at the championships. Right now if you wanted to travel between San Francisco and Perth, the price would be between $1400 and $2000 USD - and it is a long long flight. For those who are going - it takes about 24 hours to get there - try to sleep on the airplane and then you have jet lag. If you can leave a few days early to see the sights. Melbourne (which is about 2500 miles away) was delightful and the aussies are great fun. If you are thinking about going, now is the time to start putting away a few dollars (besides working on your training). michael

It was said before the Stanford meet that the times were set high to encourage people to swim. Remember the meet is spread out over many days, unlike our Nats which are four days, and therefore have an incentive to make it harder to qualify. The diff is that you have to meet qual times at Worlds, or be DQd, but our Nats let you swim three even if you don't qualify.
