The pool heater broke over the weekend, and the water was really cold (it's usually 82-86, today it was 76), and I was shivering during the main set. The chlorine levels were also really off. I'm swimming at swim club nationals up at UVA this weekend, so I decided it was better to get out than to wear myself out trying to stay warm.

RE: I got out of practice when...

Oh ho, the worst sort of non-hypocrite!

RE: I got out of practice when...

Actually Sis, in some masters clubs you might have found yourself suddenly immersed and invited to demonstrate the set.

RE: I got out of practice when...

BUHAHA I know I don't often get too many whiners and complainers :)

RE: I got out of practice when...

HAHA Acually I swim with my team while running practice....so they know that I would do it and make them join in :)

RE: I got out of practice when...

Back in summer swimming

I got out when the coach, and at the time my boss got really pissed at me. He ever so politely asked me to leave and made me pay for it that evening at pm practice. I planned to ditch pm practice but since he was at work he saw to it that I made it there.
Other than that I just leave early to go to work on the off chance I get up for an AM practice.

yikes! I have heard that is not the best of situations... Y'all probably weren't doing anything longer than a 50 leaving 3 sec apart were you? I think the worst I have seen it in LCM (aside from warmup at savannah nationals) was ~10 people. we split our lane in two and had half start at one end for the whole practice and the other half at the other end. it helped make it feel less crowded.

RE: I got out of practice when...

I was dragging and needed a day off--and we had 18 people including me in a 50 meter lane--so all I was doing was taking up space to no real purpose since I wasn't doing anything worthwhile and we badly needed fewer people in the lane....

RE: I got out of practice when...

Cramps, cramps, cramps! Next time, try this strategey: Start to swim FLY when said lane hog/ heads-up breaststroker invades. I find fly to be a good deterrant. If someone starts eyeing my lane during lap swim (and there are other lanes available) I throw in an IM, just to show that I'm serious. If the pool is crowded, though, sharing is a must.

Why do people get in the pool if they don't want to get wet?

It usually happened when I was drill a kick drill and fortunately had my kick board with me.

I would be either hanging on the lane rope (when the board got away) or on the board waiting for the muscle to let go. It usually lasted about 10 minutes and then my lags would be to tired to swim and if I tried to swim, they'd cramp again.

Now that I am done, boy, have I changed.

I got out of practice on Monday when the coach said (after a 500 warmup) "ok, the next set is a 1650, 1000, 500, 200, 100, 50. Try and hold the same pace for all"

I get out when all it is a long distance freestyle like last night 6x400 hold pace.

There is a really opinionated lady that swims in my lane and if I see her face and know that she is going to be in a bad mood I usually move over into a lap lane and do my own thing.

I get out when I don't like the workout or I am not training for anything and lack the motivation to try hard.

RE: I got out of practice when...

I actually got kudos a week or two ago for actually "completing" an entire practice....guess I should start another thread on that!

RE: I got out of practice when...

Only for medical emergencies or really, really, really, bad swims.

Exercise induced asthma has been kicking my butt in recent years. This time of year it starts to get me and then get progressively worse as the summer months get more humid. Combine that with a poorly maintianed pool (chemicals are never in balance), and you get one blue swimmer--blue from lack of O2, not emotionally.

Practice is actually something I enjoy, and most days I swim as hard, if not harder, in practice than I do at meets. There are those really bad days (see other thread) though, when nothing feels right. My coach is fond of ending practices with a 600-1200 pull, so on those nights when it seems like nothing is working, I'll bail on part of that set. I love, love, love to pull, so it has to be an extraordinarily bad day to want to skip it.

RE: I got out of practice when...

Hey Rich....Try to swim it without emphasising the kick.
