This passed Sunday I had my first ever swim meet!!!!

I had wonderful time at the meet, got to dive 3 times off the blocks :applaud: during practice, not so scary after I did it a couple of times! I'll work on that! :)

Having a mother who was a high level gymnast is a little intimidating....but hey, it is never to late to start competing in swimming, right? I also had a thought, this competition I did on Sunday was the very first type of a competition where I didn't need to win! It felt great to do something without any pressure, being a professional musician I went through a lot of contests and hated the pressure to win or to move up in ratings because I HAD to not because I wanted to.... Anyway, enough of my crazy thoughts, better go swim! Thanks for listening! :notworthy:

RE: I did it!!!!

I guess it's my upbringing, the idea was if you are doing something only do that to win, and win big, otherwise don't even bother. Sometimes you can beat all the others, but you should worry too much on that.

RE: I did it!!!!

aquaFeisty - thanks for the info!!!

FlyQueen - you are right! I am getting addicted to this whole competition thing.

The thing is though, I know that I am not ever going to be an Olympic swimmer and sometimes I think what's the point? You know I could always spend money on something else instead of paying for private swim lessons, but at the same time, it is so much fun.... I guess it's my upbringing, the idea was if you are doing something only do that to win, and win big, otherwise don't even bother. First, congrats on your first meet!!!!
Second, you can enter up to 3 events at Nationals without making any cuts. You should give it a try, since it is close to home for you this year! I have been to 3 Nationals before and they are a blast! You get to see some really fast swims, be inspired seeing 96 year olds dive in off the blocks, and the atmosphere is a big swimming party. Think about it! :)

Hey, here's a question, I don't really get anything from the Masters' team at the club where I am, if I decide not to do Masters at my club can I still compete at Masters Meets? :dunno:

I am so exited about swimming now that crazy thoughts of Nationals are slowly getting into my mind. Talked to my new private coach today and she said that I definitely can shave up to 15 sec!!!!! off my time by August. There's a time requirement to enter, right? I hope she is right. We'll see. :wiggle:

RE: I did it!!!!

Congratulations Gerdrick! Congrats!

#33 Women 30-34 100 *** 1:38.00 1:39.51 (6) 3
47.01 1:39.51 (52.50)

Not exactly sure what the (6) 3 means. I'm guessing your heat and lane?

The 47.01 is your split time at the 50. In other words your first 50 yards was done in 47.01 and your second 50 was done in 52.50 seconds. Split are useful to see how well you swam the race. Ideally your second 50 should only be 2-3 seconds slower than your first. You were about five second slower, which isn't bad, but something you can work on for next time.

RE: I did it!!!!

coolbeans!

i agree. just getting out there and doing it is the biggest accomplishment. think about all the people who don't even bother, or just wish they were.

of course it is a lot of fun to start collecting some times as well, so you can have something to compare to as you visit and participate in more meets in the future.

RE: I did it!!!!

Well, I did it!!!!

Good Job Catherine!

You made the bigeest gain by actually getting up and racing!
Practice your dive and those turns and watch that time come on down!
Good Job!!

That looks like a Hy-Tek Meet Manager "meet summary" report.

As others have said, your final time was 1:39.51. Your first 50 was 47.01, and your second 50 was 52.50.

The (6) means that you finished in 6th place in your age group (30-34), and the 3 means you scored 3 points. (Sounds like the top-8 scored points.)
