I just received this news release in my UGA swimming and diving newsletter......

Sheila Taormina, former Lady Bulldog (1988-91), gold medalist (1996), and three-time US Olympic team member (1996-00-04), was recently named

RE: Sheila Taormina wins the Jim Thorpe Award!

I am thrilled at this news and really not surprised. I know Sheila and I will tell you this, the woman is not only talented and driven, she is humble. She has realized her potential in varioius sports, trained for it, reached goals and continues to set new goals.

Like I said recently: it is important what we have done, but it is more important to set new achievement goals and work toward meeting them.

How many other Olympians have moved outside their realm of comfort sports and tried new ones and succeeded? She deserves this recognition.

Thanks for posting that. Making the Olympics in one sport is usually a life-long dream that only a few can ever experience....but making the Olympics in 3 different sports...Wow! As Vizzini from the Princess Bride would say: Inconceivable!

AND masters swimmer. Sheila set a new world record for the women&#39;s 35-39 800 meter free at Stanford last summer with a 9:13. I&#39;m sure she has quite a few more national and perhaps world masters records as well.

She&#39;s an incredible athlete. I remember her from age group swimming in Michigan.<div style="clear:both;"></div>
