Definitely look into getting some Umcka Cold Care. It&#39;s awesome stuff. And it does work for the flu as well if you get the cold and flu version. Both versions work best if you take it at the very first sign of the cold or flu coming on, but that is true of all natural supplements. Umcka definitely works really well to help ward off a cold or the flu, or will at least help to shorten the duration and severity of it.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: @#$% flu!

I got the Flu Mist this year. Get a flu shot every year. It was one of Ande&#39;s tips. There is essentially no risk. This is not guaranteed to prevent influenza every year, but it will very likely lessen the severity even if you get it. If you know real influenza, you will do ANYTHING to lessen your chances. I do.

There are some medications (Tamiflu is the best known) but these don&#39;t do a lot. The party line is that they will shorten influenza by, on average, 1 day. If you are totally miserable (and I mean flat on your back with every muscle on fire and not able to think of endorphins) maybe that&#39;s not bad. The problem is that they have to be started within 48 hours or so to be effective.

Then of course you may really have one of the other many respiratory viruses that plague us. In that case, fluids, rest, green tea, chiles, comedy and massages would be the ticket. :coffee:

I did get a flu shot, and do so every year (bad memory of a monster case in 1998, which I use to remind myself). Normally, they&#39;ve worked okay. And it&#39;s true that this time the acute phase of my illness lasted only a couple days, but the after effects have been the kicker. Of course, it&#39;s also possible that the thing may not be the flu but some other unwelcome guest. Whatever name it goes by, I&#39;d like it to go. ;) And thanks for the offer of :coffee: If you have a nice Kona blend, whole bean just ground this morning and brewed strong, you&#39;re THE MAN! :D

Seriously, thanks to you and everyone for your good wishes. Have a healthy day, all!<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: @#$% flu!

Innerfish:

My condolences on being under the weather; if it&#39;s any consolation, I have been sick since Sunday; totally out of the water and I have a 1 mile race next Sunday. This should prove interesting. But don&#39;t forget, I don&#39;t, that a lot of training has been done prior to being ill and it really doesn&#39;t take that much to get it back, unless a person has pneumonia or something really serious.

So I am banking on the fact that last Saturday I did a 3.25 mile swim, and I have only been out of the water for 4 days; sometimes unforeseen forced recoveries help more than we think.

As for your 5 mile swim in August, you HAVE time; don&#39;t worry about that; you&#39;ve got four full months plus some. And I will probably be burned at the stake here, but every single time I have ever had a flu shot, I get the flu. No one believes me except my husband because he sees the terrible pattern. All my doctors told me it was impossible; they are WRONG.

Hope you feel better and good luck in your race! I&#39;m not going to give up on mine yet... the weather here isn&#39;t cooperating with getting better, but spring is coming!<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: @#$% flu!

again, thanks folks... injustice of it all is that I did get a flu shot. I think I&#39;ll ask for a refund!

Hot food has helped, in fact... I like chile, but also ginger... I buy the real stuff and put slivers of it into stir fry mixes.

I see recommendations for green tea. It&#39;s not my favorite thing to drink but I have some b/c I heard good reports about it generally. Maybe I could work up a taste for it. Actually, odd as it seems, I like just plain hot water. I&#39;ll heat up water as I might for tea--but drink it by itself. The taste isn&#39;t bad and it seems to help my breathing.

p.s. I am feeling better this morning, but I suppose I should give it another day or so before I resume workouts. Hard to find the right balance. I don&#39;t want to get lazy, but don&#39;t want to overdo and have another setback.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: @#$% flu!

Sleep and HOT Green Chile. I thought I&#39;d managed to kick it out, was back swimming and running... even finally got back to a masters&#39; practice (which I avoided before not wanting either to infect anyone or need to be rescued). All good, right?

Wrong! It sneaked in the back door, just when I thought it had moved out for good. Those muscle aches that signaled fever... and tonight I had to skip my group run... sure it&#39;s 18 degrees out and maybe a wise move if just over an illness. But I want my health back!

There&#39;s a 5.25 mile swim I was planning on in August, and I&#39;d been on a ROLL at the end of Jan. Then crash! But in the last couple weeks, I was inching back to something like normal. Getting optimistic again. But if I have to lose another week or two of training, I don&#39;t know....

Oh and I had thought I&#39;d be good for the (running) half marathon this weekend. That&#39;s in question now. Hoping maybe this is just a temporary setback, not a whole &#39;nother case. :blah:

Get well vibes and suggestions welcome.... will say this bug has endurance. Maybe I should find out its secret for when I&#39;m back swimming for REAL again. And I just bought myself a cool new chlorine resistant poly suit as a consolation gift. Maybe I&#39;ll get to use it someday....

Sux.. foot massges...green tea.. lots of rest. Of course, you need some Comedy movies to watch too.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: @#$% flu!

No flu shot? If you&#39;ve got the real flu (they can do a blood test), go get a tami-flu shot. That&#39;ll shorten the life of that sucker by half.

I hate that! You&#39;re on a roll and then the minutiae of life drags you back. I don&#39;t know about the half marathon this weekend ... That sounds kinda iffy. Anything in August is good. You&#39;ve got plenty of time to train.

If it&#39;s not the flu, I&#39;ve been told Umcka works wonders on colds. Much better than cold eze or airborne. I think it works better if you take it right away. I&#39;d climb in a hot bath.

All my sympathies. Blech. Go away @#$%flu!! Get better. Fluids. No partying. Sux. Tell that SO ultra-runner guy to help out!<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: @#$% flu!

Thanx guys!
