Yeah, I beat her, too ... I went a 1:04 100m ***, yeah it&#39;s a world record but I like to keep those things to myself ... :rolleyes:

In all seriousness if she did a 100 and I did a 50 *** I think I&#39;d win ... anything other than that and I&#39;d just be watching her zip past ... There is an outside chance that I could beat her if I did free and she did *** ... :woot:

The US team left the 13th. I get to head out the 23rd. OK. Let&#39;s go back in time.

The year is 1977 and I was with Olympic Airways, living in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. I had organized and sponsored a swim (for fun) meet at one of the hotels there. Their pool was rectangular and had one shallow end and one deep end (and there the similarity with any official pools ends).

I was 34 at the time and had stopped &quot;real&quot; swimming for about 14 years but decided to participate in one race. (We called it the 100m. It was three lengths of the pool. The lifeguard and I had kind of paced it, then measured the length of a pool&#39;s-edge tile and multiplied it by the number of tiles and the pool was about 30-some meters.)

Lots of other races, relays, kids, swimming with balloons, drink-a-coke-dive-swim-get-out-dring-another-coke-dive-back-in, etc.....

I won the 100m and gave away the first prize to the 2nd place finisher whose prize went to the third, etc... (The &quot;prizes&quot; were Olympic Airways Flight Bags, Ashtrays, Pens, etc... plus a free dinner from the hotel).

The festivities over and everybody is just sitting by the pool having a nice chat, a young man of about 27-ish (in a Speedo, what else?) approaches me and tells me, &quot;I hear you won the 100m. I was late getting to the hotel. I would have won that race. I&#39;m challenging you.&quot;

So I tell him that the race was for fun and that I even gave &quot;my prize&quot; away. He replies by telling me that he&#39;s an ex-National level swimmer and an ex-Water Polo player and that he&#39;s a faster swimmer than me.

The thing is that I had never laid eyes on him before so I replied, &quot;OK. If you say so. You are a faster swimmer.&quot; He comes back with, &quot;Yes, but I am still challenging you to a race.&quot; My friends were urging me to accept his challenge and race him because his cockiness was rubbing them (and me) the wrong way. I didn&#39;t really feel like racing again. (That was also back when I used to smoke some 60-80 cigarettes a day and that 100m, without any kind of fitness readiness or preparation had left me hollow.)

So, I proposed to swim just two lengths. He accepted and went looking for the lifeguard and the Hotel owner to preside over the &quot;Special Challenge Race&quot; and have it announced over the loudspeakers.

I though to myself that I&#39;d just go in, do my sprint and it wasn&#39;t as if the fate of a Nation&#39;s Olympic team rested on the result. So, he&#39;ll beat me; so what?

&quot;On your marks!&quot; &quot;Get Set!&quot; &quot;Go!&quot; (The hotel owner had seen that somewhere on TV probably.)

The guy stopped halfway through the first length, as I was already turning at the far end. He had at least the grace to say, &quot;You&#39;re much too fast for me&quot;, before hurrying to the locker rooms.

Why challenge a complete stranger when you have no idea if he&#39;s slower or faster than you? It never ceases to amaze me how some people think, but I admit that it felt really good.:thhbbb: when I beat him.

Thats a pretty funny story 3strokes! I guess that guy must have been pretty embaressed after making such a big deal about racing and beating you....I can see why he ran for the locker rooms LOL! BTW my father use to work for Aramco and was station in Dhahran for many years....He met his current wife in Dubai....Small world I guess...LOL!

Your story about Megan reminded me of one. A friend of mine at work has kids that swim. A couple months ago at a meet, and I forget the exact circumstances, his daughter thought she was swimming next to Megan in an event. When she finished and realized she beat the girl next to her she was ecstatic! Of course she found out later it wasn&#39;t actually Megan Jendrick next to her. That took a little wind out of her sails! :)

That&#39;s a good one :joker:

Here&#39;s a somewhat similar story... we were at the Kerr-McGee meet, and one of the other athletes there introduced herself to us and we just went about training. She watched me swim a bit and seemed decently impressed, and then she asked me what my best 100 free time was. Well, after she heard that it still started with &quot;Fifty...&quot; she cut me off and said, &quot;Wait... you&#39;re not actually Nate Dusing, are you?&quot;

:rofl:<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: SR to NSR: Ridiculous Comments

i think drowning would be the worst way to go. i lifeguard on wrightsville beach during the summer and it is so rewarding making a save and knowing that the person wouldn&#39;t have made it without you, it is a better feeling than swimming a best time or a hard workout or anything like that<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: SR to NSR: Ridiculous Comments

Here&#39;s a couple, not nearly as funny as those though...

I was coaching a high school team and we had one kid who would swear just about every other word he said. I continually kicked him out of practice. Well, his father didn&#39;t like that, but since he couldn&#39;t defend his son breaking my rules, he just started telling people he&#39;s a better coach than me (he&#39;d never coached) and could swim faster than me. So, I told his son after being informed of such, that I would bring my suit to practice every day for the rest of the season and any day his father wanted to race, he could pick the event and we&#39;d go. I heard about three weeks later from one of this kids&#39; friends that his dad got in the community pool to &quot;train&quot; and after taking 5 minutes to do a 50, told his son to tell me he&#39;d been in a bad car accident and couldn&#39;t race me that season.
;)

I don&#39;t know Nathan, this one is absolutely hilarious! What are people thinking to challenge another person and not know for certain that person&#39;s capabilities? Hot Air is what it is....

I used to sail on Lake Michigan out of a Chicago harbor. At that time, the Chicago shoreline didn&#39;t have a concrete seawall where we were, just enormous boulders. Slippery boulders. Every summer, a few children would drown with boats filled with lifesaving equipment only 30 yards away. Because the wind usually blew out onto the lake out of our field of vision, we never heard the cries. It makes me sick every time I think about it.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: SR to NSR: Ridiculous Comments

:applaud:

I stopped during my repeats and heard several yells from the beach for HELP, HELP, HELP. I jumped out of the pool and ran to the beach. Some one was in trouble in the rough surf. We got him to shore and he was OK.

Now this was ridiculus the waves were so rough, I would have never ventured out. The day before a little boy drowned in the hotel pool, no lifeguard on duty and the pool was filled with kids non swimmers on floaties. I wish I had been there I may have been of help or would have prevented it. I arrived just after he was breathing and he died on the way to the hospital.

Another time a teenage girl apparently told her mother she had beaten my wife, Megan, in the 100 breaststroke. The mother then sent a really snotty e-mail to Megan&#39;s website, bragging about it, and asking where she could get the results &quot;for her records.&quot; Not wanting to spoil the girls fun, Megan just responded and said, &quot;I&#39;m glad she enjoyed the race. Not sure where the results can be found.&quot;

A week later the woman e-mailed again and apologized profusely, and let us know her daughter had been grounded. The mom had found the results and I guess was a little upset when she realized her daughter was 7th... and the one girl behind her wasn&#39;t Megan. ;)<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: SR to NSR: Ridiculous Comments

i think drowning would be the worst way to go. i lifeguard on wrightsville beach during the summer and it is so rewarding making a save and knowing that the person wouldn&#39;t have made it without you, it is a better feeling than swimming a best time or a hard workout or anything like that

Great! I&#39;ll be there this summer -- third week in August. I&#39;ll be sure to drown so we can meet. Since I&#39;m just a sprinter, there is probably a fairly high liklihood of this actually occurring.

At 37 I&#39;m beyond challenges...except I can drink way more than anyone here...:rofl: :rofl:<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: SR to NSR: Ridiculous Comments

I am absolutely convinced that after this Sunday&#39;s triathlon, I will have EVEN MORE stories to tell that are Ridiculous Comments; you know, all the excuses in the world.

I remember my 3rd triathlon and I only (?) placed 3rd and some people asked me what happened? I replied with this: they were faster.:rofl:

How about reverse ridiculous comments?

Has someone ever ridiculed or doubted what you said you could do and you then got to &quot;cram it?&quot;

Actually, I had kind of a similar situation where somebody &quot;doubted&quot; what I had already done and then.......

The festivities over and everybody is just sitting by the pool having a nice chat, a young man of about 27-ish (in a Speedo, what else?) approaches me and tells me, &quot;I hear you won the 100m. I was late getting to the hotel. I would have won that race. I&#39;m challenging you.&quot;

It never ceases to amaze me how some people think, but I admit that it felt really good.:thhbbb: when I beat him.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: SR to NSR: Ridiculous Comments

More tall tales:
Tonight I had the honor of sharing a lane with a guy who used to swim the Mile IM. Am I privileged or what?:rofl: :rofl: After telling me this he demonstrated his awesom freestyle form. I tried counting strokes but had to quit around 30 when it was my &quot;go time&quot; again (he was just a little past the middle of the 25y pool).

I too new to disagree. BUT, I am a bad technical swimmer (and slow), but I did swim mile+ OW. While I will never say I can IM (any distance), but I did what I did. I probably worked harder than any other swimmer because of poor form...BUT I did what I did! Maybe he did too?<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: SR to NSR: Ridiculous Comments

More tall tales:

Was swimming in our designated Masters time this past weekend, and attemped a backstroke start off the blocks, when I got to the end of the lane a young gaurd stopped me to tell me that I couldnt use the blocks, because they were for the &quot;swim team&quot;, I coolly looked him in the eye and said &quot;I am on the swim team&quot; - he looks at me like I am a nut and I know he is thinking little kid swim team, so I say &quot;the masters swim team&quot; then he says &quot;oh well you can&#39;t use the blocks because you will loosen them&quot; Now I have been rehab&#39;ing a shoulder this winter and I did put on a few pounds but I didnt think it was that bad! Today I am told it is because of &quot;insurance reasons&quot;, but we can use the blocks at &quot;designated times&quot;..... Argghhhhh....I love the support of our Y.....:frustrated:

This is NUTS! Loosen the screws? Insurance reasons? How about this one: we just don&#39;t want you to use them and there&#39;s no rhyme nor reason for our statement!!! Geez, Louize !!! It scares me the kinds of people who are in charge of things.

Yep, this qualifies as ridiculous comments.
