I&#39;m sure &quot;long and strong&quot; is great advice; but since a picture&#39;s worth 1000 words, might as well post your very, very long but strong butternutter swim from not quite two weeks ago. Definitely deserves an attaboy! Those cheers you hear at the end were definitely the loudest for that whole meet. (Hope you don&#39;t mind me posting this, coach!)

All this distance talk!

I swam a 5000 last month, actually 5500, unfortunately it was not a Postal Swim. It should have been. It was a fundraiser for the United Way. I swam 5000 in 1 Hr 50 Min, followed by a 500 cool down. Two hours total. SCM outdoor pool.

Last evening I did the 3000 Postal Swim in 55 minutes. That was 4 minutes faster than last year. SCY indoor pool. I need to register for this Postal now that I have swum it.

Can hardly wait for November. Minnesota Masters Postal Pentathlons here I come! I will do all three. Then onto Davis Aquatic Masters Brute Challenge. I am ready!

No one around where I live are interest in doing these. I am the only one in this area who does them. Sad. On the other hand I get all the bragging rights in the area! Water temp was a cool but comfortable 71. There were maybe half a dozen of us, out of 132, who didn&#39;t wear wetsuits. I thought the wetsuits were unnecessary.

To be fair, the triathletes were solving a different problem. Their race was 4 1/2 hours or more, so maybe their priority in the swim was to avoid dissipating too much energy, just trying to stay warm.

That said, I heard a couple of them describe the water as &quot;freezing&quot;, and &quot;brutally cold&quot;. Really? :lmao:<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Attaboy or attagirl: SR NH everyone welcome

Pink capped pacman was hungry. I was recruited to swim the first leg of a relay in a half ironman tri this weekend. To be fair, all the other guys were swimming the first leg of a very long tri, and I was just swimming. Still, I got 5th out of 132, not too bad! The results, from the swimming leg only, looked like this:Whoever__Time____AgeGroup
Some_guy 26:25.3 20-24
Some_guy 27:00.2 35-39
Some_guy 29:26.1 25-29
Some_guy 29:41.9 30-34
Swmosaur 30:47.1 50-54
Some_guy 31:10.4 45-49
Some_guy 31:32.8 45-49
Some_guy 31:41.5 35-39

The start was in three waves, each 3 minutes apart. The first wave was men under 40. They wore yellow caps. The second wave was men over 40. They wore green caps. The third wave was women and relays. We wore pink caps.

About 5 minutes into the race, I started catching some guys in green caps. About 10 minutes in, I started catching some guys in yellow caps. About that time, it dawned on me that the guys in yellow caps (a) had a 6 minute head start, and (b) were at least 15 years younger than me.

You get your motivation where you find it, right? I wanted to mow down the yellow caps. So for the rest of the race, I was like PacMan*, gobbling down green &amp; yellow caps. What fun!

Lessons learned: (a) Open water is fun! I had a good time! (b) Triathletes are the real deal. Those young guys who beat me were genuinely fast, and they were just swimming the first 30 minutes of what was, for them, a 4 1/2 hour race. Yikes!

I liked it! I did not miss the 65 flip turns. I enjoyed riding somebody&#39;s feet for a few hundred &amp; not sighting. I did not miss hyperventilating over splits. I enjoyed swimming a distance of more or less, plus or minus, and finishing with a time of whatever, and not sweating the tenths.

And I especially enjoyed trotting out of the water, and getting handed a popsicle stick with the number &quot;2&quot; printed on it, for a second place overall finish! I wanted to keep the popsicle stick really badly, but they needed it for the next race.

The next race was an open water 200. The start was a boiling cauldron of thrashing arms and legs. Somehow I started on the wrong end of the beach &amp; had to swim over a bunch of people. What a hoot! :thhbbb: Got kicked in the left goggle. I got 3rd overall in that race.
