Then afterwards, I would get in the hot tub again for a few minutes and stretch again. That was really good, and I felt very loose both in the pool and after practice...I am excited for my season to be over so I can swim at the YMCA everyday and have that option when I am tight or sore.

I do the same with a slight variation in that I do some gentle stretches, esp neck, upper back and shoulder stretches in the hot water. I do the same in reverse after I swim.

RE: Hot tub before swimming

When I hurt my back a few weeks ago, I would go in the hot tub first for just like 5minutes maximum, and then get out stretch for a few minutes then get in and do my workout. I swim everyday but Sundays are my really easy days. I did some hard workouts this week so I was pretty tired today when I went to swim. Before getting in the water I decided to hop in the jacuzzi for a few minutes, which I've never done before practice. I only did 2,000 but I felt really relaxed and in control of my stroke. I was taking 12 strokes per 25 (scy) instead of 13-14 which I normally take. I've never heard anything good or bad about so that's why I'm asking.

I've only done it the night before, and used to do it before a soccer match too.

RE: Hot tub before swimming

I personnally feel the hot tub is better for after workout than before workout. Really helps loosen those overworked muscles, otherwise you are diving into a cold pool after being in a nice hot tub and just stiffen up.

There are some people in my masters group that like to do this before every workout. My personal feeling is that when I'm getting ready to do a pretty hard workout the hot tub relaxes me too much and I tend to feel lethargic during the main set. I prefer to stretch instead and hot tub after workout. However, for a technique workout I could see how being more relaxed would be beneficial. But, like I said, I know people that enjoy the pre-workout hot tub.

RE: Hot tub before swimming

I wish there were one at my pool so I could test it out! But my pool does have a sauna and sometimes I step into there (if I have enough time) before swimming. I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes either way but it feels good. :)
