This is the last major competition before the USA team heads for Melbourne for the 2007 FINA World Championships. I will reserve my predictions and judgements on the other thread that was started about Mebourne until this meet is over. I will provide a link about the meet.

True, very true.

It would be nice to see a 2008 Olympic sweep by the Texas Trio in their respective events.

I do have to say however that I am gunning for both Lochte in 2008 as well as Erik Vendt. This will be an incredible comeback for Vendt if he can pull this one off. I think he is at the right club to make it happen, that is for sure. Everyday is race day there from what I understand.

Lastly, what happened to your buddy Josh Davis and his potential comeback? Is he still working on that?

RE: Toyota Southern Calif. I don't think there is any one else out there that can challenge Phelps in the 200 IM. I can't believe how fast Natalie swam the 200 free!! When I went 47 low in the 100 free back in the day, I was still nowhere near 1:41 in the 200 free?? If you look at the USMS records in my age group (40 - 44 year old males)...the 100 free record is 45.9 and the 200 free record is 1:43.0 ...Sure we're older and hence we die a little faster....but I still think that her 200 free time is smokin fast for someone who swims a 47 low hundred (not that her hundred time is slow or anything...LOL!!).

I will be happy either way, I am just saying that the potential exists for things to change in that event.

I've heard at that level there it's mostly mental. They are all super talented, they all train riddiculously hard so the race often goes to the mentally toughest ... what was Spitz's famous quote? Practice is 90% physical and 10% mental, races are 10% physical and 90% mental ...

Jody Henry said something similiar along the lines of at the elite level there is very little difference in the physical abilities between the athletes, they all train hard, but the biggest difference is the mental toughness ...

Anyway, I love Erik Vendt, too. What a stud!

Does anyone think Phelps will get upset in any of the events he swims? Maybe he'll be spreading himself too thin?

RE: Toyota Southern Calif. Josh Davis has officially retired and he made that official in a press release about 2 months ago.

Natalie is like Lochte they both have really good underwater SDK ... amazing actually ...

I'd like to see Phelps and Lochte in the 2IM and Phelps and Vendt in the 4IM ...

RE: Toyota Southern Calif. 1 Phelps, Michael F 21 CW-MI 44.44 42.43
                 20.63 42.43 (21.80)

Would one of you please explain the numbers after the club name? I've never looked at swim times before now and don't really know what I'm looking at.:dunno:

No matter how fast you are, there will always be somebody to come along and show you up.

I would love to see Lenny back in the thick of it but his shoulder history is going to make that difficult for him.

RE: Toyota Southern Calif. Peirsol was a little dismissive about Lochte out touching him...I realize Aaron is still faster in LC but that might change very soon, you never know. 2008 might bring a buffet of crow to a few well known athletes. Phelps and Sandeno made a great showing for Club Wolverine, although this is no surprise.

RE: Toyota Southern Calif. The numbers (assuming I'm reading them correctly) are:

1 Phelps, Michael F 21 CW-MI 44.44 42.43
20.63 42.43 (21.80)

21 is Phelps age
CW-MI is Club Wolverine, which is in the Michigan LSC (local swim committee/club, I think??)
44.44 was his seed time, the time he used to enter the meet
42.43 was the actual time he went
and 20.63 42.43 (21.80) are his splits: he swam the first 50 of his 100 free in 20.63 and came back in 21.80... SMOKIN' FAST

I don't know if they count Peirsol's record as being LCM or SCY, too. He didn't do well last year at a meet and pulled out of finals ... I don't think he swims well unrested, Crocker doesn't seem to either ... though both of their times are fabulous!

For the women the IMs and breaststrokes are going to be crazy. There will certainly be an Olympian or former world record holder left off ... that's nuts!

For the men, I can't wait! I think Peirsol will be fine, he's a racer and LCM no one can touch him, at least yet. With Lenny back in the mix, it'll be great! There are definitely some spots that will go to underdogs ... so exciting!

RE: Toyota Southern Calif.
