The idea is to progressively descend - the first 100 of the 200 should be faster than the 100 just before it, and so on. I did this set at least 4 times in college and I can tell you that what actually happens is that is just becomes progressively more boring. It's not particularly hard so we'd swim through it and think about other things.

RE: Insane Holiday Set/ Not your favorite set

sprinters "delight"

It was a Sunday evening if I recall (my college men's team had practices at 5:00pm on Sundays--they always sucked) and it was a brutal and long workout. To protest, someone had the bright idea that we should all swim it in the buff. That way, our coach would get "mooned" by us all on every turn. Fortunately, the women's team was not around so modesty (and cold water) were not major hindrances. I remember it being quite "liberating" to swim in the buff. The novelty of it wore off pretty quickly in the face of the crushingly long set, but it did give us all some additional motivation.

RE: Insane Holiday Set/ Not your favorite set

In El Paso, the loco swimmers get together for a cult swim called Los Rapidos around the holiday season. You know its gonna be a good practice when the coach moves the trash bucket away from guard stand closer to edge of pool. That 100,200,300,400,500 is a very popular set which can be modified many ways. Last year I remember doing that as:

1x100 free @1:10
2x200 stroke @2:20
3x300 free @3:30
4x400 IM@5:00
5x500 free @5:50

There was no break in between, you just went one right into the other.

Luckily I am in taper mode right now and will be swimming my big mid season meet this fri/sat/sun. Swimming the 500 free on friday, 100 fly, 200 free, 50 free on Saturday and 200 fly, 200 im and 100 free on Sunday. If I qualify in the top 16 then I will swim at finals in evening. Need to enjoy this because next week training will be hell :-)

5 sets of 10 or something like that... dont remember what the interval was; probably something like :60 cause they knew it was tough, but there were apparently trash cans at each end of the lanes...

There's this guy Chris on our master team who would love this set. He's training for the 200 fly right now and always looking for a way to swim more of it in practice. We may have to try and do it. And I'll be sure to include the buckets at the end of the pool - thanks for the warning on that!! :60 sounds plenty fast to me! And NO FINS!

RE: Insane Holiday Set/ Not your favorite set

I was soooo glad I missed practice that morning!!!! That is a sprinter's nightmare! Way to go for making that interval the whole way through. You are one tough cookie!!

I was so sorry that you were not there that day!! Landon was instrumental in my making that set. He's so long and smooth regardless of what's thrown at him. Every time I would feel myself tightening up, I'd just look over and see how he was swimming and I'd lengthen my stroke and focus on really rotating. I tell you, he's my own personal training video. I attribute my better breaststroke to him (and our coach Kim!)
