At practice one morning, a lady swimming a few lanes over looked at me and said "I remember when I gave you a set similar to this one in high school" ...and the proper reply would have been...."Are you trying to seduce me Mrs. Robinson?"

The age group team at our YMCA is called the Riptide. Someone wrote "Ebbtide" next to the word "Masters" on a poster near the pool. At least he didn't write "Slack tide"--Ebbtide implies movement, even if it's backwards.

I was swimming by myself during the kids practice in an unoccupied lane. While attempting to keep up with the coaches practice for the 13 year old kids I noticed they were talking about an old guy in the pool. Apparently this fellow was doing fairly well that day as he was making most of the intervals. In addition this fellow probably needed to slow down before he had a heart attack. I must have looked for that old guy for 30 minutes before a light went off as to who they were talking about. In addition to being old I obviously have a cognitive problem and bad vision. AARP I think did a terrible thing with the Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid reorganization. No real solution just puhing it off from the state to the federal government.

Our high school's pool had a fire so the girls are swimming in the outdoor community pool until it is repaired. Yesterday I asked if I could join them. I found out that I am older than the head coach's father. that is very frightening!

Even though this was 6 years ago, it shows the perspective of the kids. Back in 2000, at the age of 33, I had the opportunity to work out with the high school swim team. The kids accepted me as the older guy in lane 5. One day my age came up in conversation - One of the kids said "Wow, you really are old. I thought you were like 19 or something."

My advice for the grey hair is "shave it off". You will look younger which translates into feeling younger and training harder --- and might take a few tenths off your 50 free. Where is the pride in the grey hair? Is this a concept like "AT least I can feel satisified that I am good for my age" Also, must be annoying to hear all the time _ "wow your in good shape for an old dude." Screw this crutch. I dont care if Im 40 or 50. I dont want high school students beating me until Im at least 65.

I enjoy the occasional congratulatory high fives from the college swimmers who join our masters group during the summer months. Being a "forty something"..I have the dubious priviledge of remaining in the fast lane when they come to the session. Teenagers definitely have a different perception of age. Any sign of grey hair automatically qualifies you as a dinosaur...or "old dude" as they say.

Speaking of Dennis Baker, how did he fare in his events at Stanford? It seems like he was supposed to be one of the shining stars in the butterfly events, the Ian Crocker of USMS if you will. As for Gull getting old, I suspect that Dr. Oz would tell you that your real age is far under your calendar age due to your exercise and a healthy diet ( I assume you eat heart smart :D ).

I will be the first to admit that despite his advanced years, Gull80 is one heck of a swimmer, probably a candidate for Team AARP.
