This is the World Championship for Masters. Lets put the cost of parking in perspective. I cant see this as a major cost.

I am in Tokyo. Here it costs more to park a car than my house rent back in the US.

Imagine if you had to fly from Tokyo, get a hotel, rent a car, buy food everyday. The cost of parking is nothing.

But I will pay this huge costs happily and am looking for forward to competing and meeting my US competitors!

See you at Stanford!

Maybe someone from the meet management team can answer this. That way at least you can plan what kind of cash you need to have for this. Maybe someone form the forum team could ask someone from the meet management team and then post their reply… That way at least we can plan what kind of cash we need to have for this.

I talked to Michael Moore about this a while ago and at that time the LOC did not have a definitive answer.

RE: Parking at World's 12.00 a day?

I was thinking about what I have paid for parking for age group meets. In Chicago at UIUC it is a 5.00 event fee parking for all day. Except Friday, which you pay the per hour rate if you get there too early. In Indy at UIPUI, it is 4.00 event parking. Both these cities are big cities, cost a lot to stay at, and the parking is a whole lot cheaper than 12.00.

RE: Parking at World's 12.00 a day?

And I agree -- get a grip. It's going to cost you money to park there. It's also going to cost you money in entry fees, food, hotel, airfare (perhaps), airport transportation, rental car, etc. This isn't a summer recreation league meet with 100 people. This is the World Champs.

I can understand why she is a little dismayed at the cost. Not everyone can sink money into the cost of going to worlds, yet I can see why it is attractive to go this year as it will be cheaper this year since it is in the states.

I think posters have been a little to hard on the first poster. Hopefully people can give ideas on where to park and how to keep the costs down. California certainly is not cheap to visit!

RE: Parking at World's 12.00 a day?

I don't think the parking fee would be a deal breaker for me.

RE: Parking at World's 12.00 a day?

The reason I am going is that for the first time in a long time it is going to be affortable for me as San Francisco is only 4 hours away from Mexico city.

If you go to the Stanford Avery Aquatics Center page, it says:

Parking

Public Parking (Free)

Parking is located in the Varsity Parking Lot. It can be accessed via Nelson Road, off of Galvez Street, north of Stanford Stadium. Marked disabled spaces are located in the southwest and southeast corners of the lot. A Disabled Placard (from any state) will be necessary to access the disabled parking lot.

The $12 a day is speculation. The FINA e-letter that has been coming out described it as "a nominal charge." I'll wait and figure out my options once we know for sure what a nominal charge is.

A thought... I need to be at the pool for six days of competition. IF parking is $12 a day that would be $72. Perhaps I could get a monthly pass for less.

RE: Parking at World's 12.00 a day?

Trying to find solutions? Sure doesn't appear that way to this reader. Your many threads on this one topic appear rather to be an inordinate amount of whining, kvetching, complaining and "woe is me."

I can understand being on a budget and maybe you don't travel much so this comes as a shock. But I don't think it's really all that unexpected to anyone who has ever been to big meets or other events in urban settings.

So feel free to inquire about public transportation options, feel free to walk, and a "gee, I'm disappointed I didn't know this earlier" is ok too . . . but imho you've gone a bit over the top on the subject, blowing it up a tad out of proportion.

California is very expensive, some very expensive real estate in Palo Alto. Having said that, I feel embarassed by your vehemence on this subject. Many swimmers end up car pooling at meets like this, or as said elsewhere, using public transportation.
