If straight ahead, parallel to the surface of the water, is 0 degrees and straight down, perpendicular to the surface of the water is 90 degrees. Keeeping your head in "neutral" prevents the hips from dropping deeper and bogging you down. The water should skim over the top of the head. When you breathe, try visualizing the "one eyed jack" as in a deck of cards. One eye in the water ....one eye out.
