Wow is right. I missed that completely. That looks to me like a serious hole in his training program - not enough lactate or a poor aerobic base. Or perhaps he had both of those things and just over rested after his spectacular conference 50 free.

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

If Cullen over rested, he wouldn't have been able to go 19.1 in the 50.

I'm in the middle of taper right now, and over resting really freaks me out. But I know I can do a good 50 and good 100 in the same meet. The 200 is a different story. You can look at any of my swims from NCAAs as proof.

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

I know Sam mentioned Ryan Lochte and his amazing swims.....but how about Simon Burnett's 200 free.....1:31.20....thats unreal!....but I guess 1:37.6 in the 200 back might be even more unreal?....I can't fathom either so it doesn't really matter....Lochte's 200 I.M. is also beyond reason!

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

1 Lochte, Ryan SR Florida 1:40.07 1:37.68

Absolutely amazing! What is this guy going to do for an encore??

Let's just say this: Phelps had crocker's picture on his wall after losing to him at the worlds. Something tells me Lochte's picture is going on Phelps' wall now. Both he and Peirsol better not get lazy betweennow and Beijing.

But on a more important note: Cullen Jones wins the 50, but can't break 44 in the 100. Wow.

But who am I to talk? I couldn't go under 1:59 in the 200 *** to save my life.

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

Ryan Lochte!! It's going to be exciting. I really thought Auburn was going to win handily after day one, but Arizona swam lights outs tonight. It should be very exciting tomorrow!

Jim: Vanderkaay's best time in the 1650 is a 14:36 which he swam last year at NCAAs. That was good for second behind Larsen Jensen who swam a 14:32.

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

Sam, I'm disappointed that you picked Stanford. What kind of Longhorn are you?

I know, guilty as charged! Texas should be back next year for sure. I thought I was being realistic picking Stanford, but you're right that relay cost them dearly. Somewhat ironic about the breaststroke dolphin kick huh.

Tomorrow definitely shapes up as one of the best last days we have seen, probably since the last time Texas won over Stanford.

What's amazing about Arizona is how they are scoring so well with so few swimmers.

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

Can I go back and change my Stanford pick? Arizona is swimming lights out! Amazing since many of those guys were just in Australia last week for Commonwealth Games. It looks like he had just enough left in the tank to pull it off. Imagine how disappointing it would have been if he missed the mark by 0.1 seconds.

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

Lochte is on fire, but I'm still most impressed by Vanderkaay breaking the 500 record. Do you think Vanderkaay can beet Chris Thompson's NCAA record in the 1650 at 14:26 something?....That comes to just under 52.49 seconds per hundred for an entire 1650!.....What is Vanderkaay's best 1650 time anyway?....anybody happen know?....I know that Frank Thompson (AKA the human swimming encyclopedia) would know that.

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

Sam, I'm disappointed that you picked Stanford. Arizona will be winning after day two. They're one point behind after the 100 ***. And Arizona has more points coming in the 100 back, and their diver looks to win the 3-meter, though I'm not sure if they start clean for the finals.

And then there's the 800 free relay. Auburn's not in the top eight there, and Arizona will clean everyone's clock.

But tomorrow will be a closer one than tonight. Auburn and Arizona are hurting in the 200s, but Arizona looks to get more in the top eight than Auburn in those events. Plus, the 100 free is all Arizona. Stanford had a chance but that relay DQ really deflated them.

Boy, do I wish I were there. I'd be conflicted, though. I'd have to cheer on the Longhorns. But for the first time since leaving Austin I live in a town with a great college swim team, and that's been fun all season to experience.

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

Simon Burnett: 1:31.20 200 free
21.28, 23.16, 23.09, 23.67

I'm amazed he held 23s for the last 150, after opening with a 21.2.

Anyway, it's the fastest 200 yard free ever. Michael Phelps is probably quaking.

Converted, that about two-tenths of the 200-meter free world record. Makes me wonder how fast Ian Thorpe could go in a 200-yard free. But I don't think he has great turns, so he probably couldn't outdo Burnett.

1:31.20. I imagine they gave him a very long and well-deserved standing ovation.

That swim is better than Lochte's 1:40.5 200 IM.

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

Arizona won the 200 medley relay, in US Open record time -- 1:23.88.

That's faster than Longhorn -- Piersol, Hansen, Crocker and Walker -- went a month ago in Austin.

Spilts: Subirats, Albert 21.47
Rollins, Dave 23.33
Ferns, Lyndon 20.22
Burnett, Simon 18.86

Amazing.

And, Stanford was disqualified for "Downward butterfly kick - ***." I kind of have to laugh at that, because when I swam in college, the Stanford Cardinal was known for dolphin kicks.

So ... did the guy do more than one kick per turn? I think so. He joins Michael Phelps and Chris Thompson, teamates that he works out with every day at Club Wolverine as the ones who broke the other American and NCAA records from 1995. This sets up some interesting possibilities in his other events. He won again very easily by over 4 seconds.

Ryan Lochte was very impressive in breaking the less that month old record of Michael Phelps with 1:40.55 dropping about 1.2 seconds from his best. Now the 1:40 barrier is in sight and we could see the 200 IM go under like the recent 200 Fly and the 200 Back a couple of years ago.

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

Texas didn't fare so well tonight but

it's pretty much any one's race in the 50
I've never seen a top 8 that tight
only .14 separating first from 8th

Matt McGinnis had the ability to make top 8 in the 500 but took his 500 out too hard and paid dearly
ouch!

I hope he redeems himself in the 200

The former AD at Knox College, where I went, recently left to go back to the NCAA. He is in charge of checking to ensure that foreign sholarship students aren't really professionals in the home contries.

That sounds like a daunting task to say the least. What percentage of foreign swimmers do y'all think are actually paid by their countries?

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

Cullen Jones' 50 freestyle at conference (19.07) was very surprising

It wasn't that surprising in as much as he swam a sub 19.5 quite early in the season (forget exactly where and when). Also he won the 50 free at World University Games last summer with a 22.2 (LCM). So he's definitely been the guy to watch in the 50 for the last year.

It will be interesting to see if he can go under 19 seconds.

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

Cullen Jones' 50 freestyle at conference (19.07) was very surprising, but his medley relay split (18.42) was stunning. His coach claimed that he was neither tapered nor shaved. I am not sure I totally believe it. If true, look for him to enter Fred Bousequet country (or beyond.)

RE: 2006 Men's NCAA Swimming Championships

Jones went 22.1(long course) at the World University Games this past summer.

He should be something to watch this week.
