My wife's goggles tend to leak because she has deep set eyes.

She has set the straps soo tight that it hurts and leaves marks for 12 hours- for real!

she tried loose also and it didn't work.

I asked Heide what brand of goggles she was wearing in that photograph. She said they are the TYR Special Ops 2.0 model. Also, for anyone who is interested, the swimsuit she is wearing is the "Engine" brand, which is sold by All American Swim.

RE: Best Goggles for Deep Set Eyes?

I highly recommend that she use a larger profile goggle that does not set on her eye sockets.
I use Aquasphere and started after I was getting these weird bumps on my eyelids from having to wear my goggles so tight to keep them from leaking. My doctor at the time told me that I was basically developing permanent water retention on my eyes and that I was looking forward to a droopy eyelid future, or plastic surgery. It was miserable, although my husband found it hilarious to say things like "Cool! I married a Klingon!"
I switched to the Aquasphere, which I was already using for open water, and not only did I no longer have issues with leaking, but the bumps went away and I don't have those insane black and blue looking rings anymore.

I like the Seal XP. You look slightly goofy, but more and more of my team are wearing them, and at this point, I don't care. They feel great.

Good luck!

RE: Best Goggles for Deep Set Eyes?

On a related note, I am trying to find a brand of goggles that does not make marks around my eyes. Any suggestions? I don't have to dive in with the goggles.

You might try the Barracuda standard goggle. They are not low profile (not for racing) and are designed for comfort and basic lap swimming. They don't seem to fit everyone, and can leak if you don't/can't get the straps adjusted. The straps tend to wear out after a year or so as I recall and the goggles tend to fog after time (cleaning them after each use with a little water or mild soap and water could prevent the fogging). The foam around the goggles does prevent raccoon eyes. Barracuda's Bliss goggle has a lower profile and claims to prevent raccoon eyes too, but I have not tried them and really haven't used the standards in a long time.

RE: Best Goggles for Deep Set Eyes?

I have been searching for a replacement to my old school Speedo goggles for years as well! I have swum copetitively since i was a kid (now i'm much older and am returning after a 5 year hiatus bc of cold intolerance bc of meds--going to wear my tri wetsuit in 78 degree water so please dont scoff at me!). I have always had trouble with leaking because my eyes are so deep set. i used to use a speedo (don't know model) but they stopped making them. i just bought another speedo which seemed promising but of course they leak. i can go into a shop and try on every single pair of goggles and i kid you not none of them will "stick". so.. i'm going to try Kaiman...thanks for the tip!

RE: Best Goggles for Deep Set Eyes?

I also happened to buy both the Kaiman and a pair of Swedish goggles in my last Kiefer order. I've been using the Kaimans since January, and they're still reasonably leakproof and perfectly clear.

I tried the Swedes this past week. Took me that long to remember to assemble them -- it's not something you can do just before getting into the pool. They work very well, but after swimming with the Kaimans I feel almost blind. It's not that they fog up, but it seems like the lenses aren't as clear to start with, and I miss the wide field of vision.

The only thing I found uncomfortable about the Swedes was the way the string rubbed against my nose before I put the little plastic tube on.

I've got fairly deep-set eyes and a big head (size 7 7/8 hat). Both of these have enough strap to them that I can get them on comfortably.

Kaiman goggles offer features that are superior to a traditional swim goggles, in a exceptional competitive goggle design. She just needs to find that pair that "feels right".

I bought the Vanguisher and love them except the fact that the plastic strap holder semms to break easily. As I was putting my goggles on before the 200 BR I noticed the strap was loose- I was nervous as it was, so I just tied a triple knot around them- left them that way and just completed my next meet this weekend with the triple knot on the strap and it was fine.

I either use very small goggles like the socket rockets that fit inside or Aquasphere Kaiman goggles that fit outside-although my face is small the large work best for this. The Kaiman is more comfortable for long swims but not so good for starts or hard pushes off the wall. The masks don't fit so well for me. Its also important to play with the tension of the straps (too tight tends to pull them off my eyes instead of on) and to make sure the skin they will go on is pretty clean to make a good seal.

RE: Best Goggles for Deep Set Eyes?

hey sd, about those Kaiman glasses. Several swimmers have told me that the large size tends to have the lenses touch the eyeballs. Next time you get the chance try the adult small size. I like the Speedo with foam as well. Everyone keeps asking why I don't switch and I've tried, but none fit that well. I think I still have two new ones left. I might just have to keep rebuilding them until they totally fall apart.

The only other ones I liked were Tyr, but even those were a pain to get right, and I had to use the bunggee type strap.

RE: Best Goggles for Deep Set Eyes?

I've never heard of anyone having problems because otheir eyes are deep set.
