Heck, if my memory is not going south, I think some guy named Tom posted that he thought she would eventually smash Janet Evans records, or at the least had one heck of a shot at doing so.

Janet Evans was one the greatest swimmers ever, but seeing Kate Ziegler take down that record warms my heart. I knew she had it in her the first time I watched her swim.

Janet Evans time of 15:52.10 was set back in 1988. Janet Evans still has one World Record (800 FR LCM) and two American Records (400 - 800 FR LCM) still standing. I believe the 800 Free will be the last one to go. This swim by Ziegler could be the performance of the year and these swims are right up there with Michael Phelps swims from World Championships. If this swim was done not tapered or rested then we may see more of a time drop in two months at Nationals in Indy. This swim is faster than what Mike Burton and Rick De Mont swam back in 1972.

I had the pleasure of timing during this swim. Not for her lane, but in the lane next to her. That was the first time I have ever seen a world record swim in person and it was something I won&#39;t soon forget. Early in the race it was clear something special was going to happen and everyone there got behind her to cheer her on. It was AMAZING!

Witnessing your first world record swim is a great thing. My first one was watching Jenny Thompson take down the East German 100 free world record in 1992 at the Olympic Trials.

Based on her 400 and 800, I didn&#39;t think she&#39;d be close to breaking 16 minutes. I guess those two swims, as well as her awesome 56+ 100 free, were just warmups.

I seriously doubt she was broken down. She went 11 seconds slower at worlds, when she was supposedly tapered. The mile will be offered for women at nationals this summer, but I would imagine training for the mile will help her 800 next year.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Kate Ziegler - 4:33.35

eddie told me this today after practice

They do everything just a bit better than the &quot;other guy&quot;. They don&#39;t have a magic catch or some super propulsive kick but they master every little aspect of the stroke and the race to make it seem mind boggling to those of us who watch in awe. All of the factors (talent, physical build, coaching, effort put forth by the swimmer, etc) come into alignment at the right time to give us swimmers like Ziegler, Phelps, Hansen, etc..<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Kate Ziegler - 4:33.35

I am in absolute awe at swimming times today. She smashed her own American Record in the 1000 free by over three seconds, swimming to a 9:21.55! (Previous record 9:24.80.)

Here are her splits (hope I wrote them down and typed them correctly).
They will be on the www.pvswim.org website tomorrow morning if you want to check.

53.43
1:49.74
2:46.28
3:42.90
4:39.48
5:36.19
6:33.66
7:30.66
8:27.26
9:21.57.

She also broke the pool record in the 100 free with a 49.78. I would note that the 16 year old who placed second with a 51.25 was only 5&#39;2&quot; tall and very petite.

Our other local hero, Tom Koucheravy (PanPac team member) swam to a 15:01.71 in the 1650 free, breaking his own pool record.

All the fastest swimmers in fly and back spent a lot of time underwater SDK-ing. Some 14 year kid swam a 47.4 in the 100 free. What a fast meet!!!<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Kate Ziegler - 4:33.35

I couldn&#39;t have said that better, scyfreestyler!!! This kind of reminds me of people who &quot;go by charts&quot; rather than actual performance based results. So when swimmers come around and swim outside of the &quot;norm&quot; or &quot;chart&quot;, some people then decide that this is now the &quot;best new way&quot; and, once again, things get changed up.

Kinda similar to how the health people say this food is good for you, then years later, it is actually bad for you, and on and on, thus confusing everyone about what they should eat/not eat :blah::blah::blah:.

Kate is fast and she is large, I am impressed.

It was a treat to watch her. She got a huge ovation. My daughter&#39;s coach made her counts Kate&#39;s SPL. It was 17 every single length. Quite a high stroke rate for some one who&#39;s, I think, 6&#39;2&quot;. I think she has great long course potential because she has great rhythm and her turns, while very good, were not perfect. She also, as others probably know, does &quot;cross train&quot; by regularly going to PT to keep her shoulders and other stuff together. She&#39;s swimming the 1000 tomorrow.

This reinforces my belief that SPL is an often over used analysis of a swimmer. Surely if her SPL was 22 she would not be the swimmer she is but I think that a persons overall performance is a much better indicator as to whether they are doing things &quot;right&quot; or not.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Kate Ziegler - 4:33.35

She just swam a 4:34.0 in the 500 free tonight at the Dolan meet. I look forward to seeing her swim the next two years as the 2008 Olympics approach.....:notworthy:<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Kate Ziegler - 4:33.35

Kate Ziegler broke another one of Janet Evans American Records. Could this be the start of seeing the 4:03, the 8:16, and the 15:52 Long Course Free records being broken next year? These records are 16 - 17 years plus and counting.
