In fact, a 200 is the longest event I have competed in since joining a Masters team early this summer. But for yesterday’s meet, I wanted to try something different. And that is the great thing about

RE: My first 1500M

I'm in the 30-34 group.

I probably should have mentioned that.

RE: My first 1500M

OK, I feel slightly less decrepit then...

RE: My first 1500M

I think you did a great job! And now you have a time to beat - you can concentrate on beating your personal best times.

I am impressed by the split time on the 50, too - no way after all that could I pull out a fast 50.... :)

RE: My first 1500M

Congrats! As a sprinter who only swims distance when he has to, I can totally relate to the pace and especially the mindset of a strong last 300 - no 200 - no 75! Next time just get the food and sleep you need and I'll bet we'll see an 18:41.

Thanks. An 18:41 would be quite an accomplishment. Somehow I think its going to take a little more than a good night's sleep and a decent carbo load to do. But it will sure make for a good goal in this race the next time.

One thing I learned swimming this race was that it was more of a mental challenge than a physical one. There is a whole lot of time to think and over analyze things. I was able to zone out for the first 20 laps or so, but after that it felt like insomnia. My body was tired but my mind was like a race track. It was a very strange battle but a rewarding one in the end. I wonder if this was merely due to my lack of sleep or if this is what I can expect the next time I swim it.

Still, the lack of sleep and the struggle during the race was very much worth it! These guys sure helped celebrate the moment. (the prior nights catch before the swim). Yum!

I'm sure the next time I swim this event won't be on the opening weekend of lobster season. :D

And that's fine with me, I've seen what those look like and I think I'll stick with the great work outs my masters coach writes.

But I think there are things you can work on that help in distance events during a typical masters work out. I am definitely not an expert on the distance stuff, but here is what I worked during my masters work outs and most of it came from info I read from this forum.

1. I challenged myself on any repeat 100 set to hold the fastest posible pace. A few months ago finishing 10 x 100's on 1:30 SCY was a challenge by itself. Now I try to stay under 1:05 for every one and try to break a minute on the last one. And that last 100 in those sets felt very much like my last 100 in the 1500 on sunday. I was ready for that feeling.

2. I forced myself to kick every set of every work out. My kick still stinks, but just being able to kick the whole 1500M helped a great deal with my body position and efficiency.

3. I worked every turn hard in practice trying to glide past the flags. Our team has the great fortune of having Brian Goodell on it and this was something I learned swimming next to him during a saturday work out. He would just kill me with his great streamline off the wall. It was a difference of a half a body length over each turn until I started copying his form off the wall. It came down to simply keeping my head down and in a streamline position through the beginning of my stroke. That distance over 59 turns is a long way and a lot of wasted speed and energy.

I hope this helps you as much as it has me with my first 1500M.

Good luck!

I WROTE THE FORUM ABOUT TWO MTHS. AGO FOR ADVICE ON SELF TRAINING. I GOT GREAT SUGGESTIONS BUT I'M ONLY ABLE TO APPLY THE TRAINING ON WEEKENDS WHILE SWIMMING ALONE. OUR TYPICAL MASTERS WORKOUT DOESNT DO THAT TYPE OF WORKOUT.

I ACTUALLY SEEM TO BE GETTING SLOWER AT THE 1500 BUT MY TIMES FOR SPRINTS DURING REGULAR WORKOUTS HAVE IMPROVED.

IN MY CASE JUST BEATING A 24 MIN. 1500 WOULD BE GREAT. I THINK UNDER A 20 MIN IS REALLY WORTH TALKING ABOUT IN ANY AGE GROUP. I'M 53. I ONE MONTH TO GO BEFORE THE MEET IN SANTA CLARITA, CA.

RE: My first 1500M

Congrats! last year I did a 1500 scm in 23.42... I'm pretty happy with myself! It's a challenge to finish that swim, especially due to the fact that masters don't get that much time to practice.

Last year in Italy we made up an informal challenge between sprinters and distance swimmers. Each athlete had to do 50m, 100m, 800m and 1500m. In the end, the sprinters won. (I was on the distance swimmers team... sigh...)

But the important thing is, a good time was had by all. :)

This year we've changed the format to 50m, 200m and 1500m. We'll see how it goes!

Buon nuoto!
