That's awesome she was able to make it to Beijing. They have continued to cover her story on the local news in Seattle. A month or so ago they had a story about Marin and I was skeptical she'd be able to make the trip. She looked pretty weak. You've got to really hand it to this girl, she's tough! edit: Let me rephrase that. She looked weak in body. Obviously strong in will.

WOW!!! That is the true power of God working in her life!!!! Amen to that. LOTS of prayers were going out for her. She has a lot of faith and the will of a champion too.

It was tough on her due to competing with the dizziness and nausea, but she fought her way through and made it. Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes! Here is the announcement on her website: Sunday, April 6, 2008 3:58 PM CDT Beijing it is! What a day it's been. We are awed to be able to tell everyone that Marin will represent the USA as a member of the 2008 Paralympic Swim Team in China this September. We gathered with other swimmers and supporters this morning at the Aquatics Center in Minneapolis where the team announcement was made. When Marin's name was announced, we were all amazed and overjoyed while Marin was absolutely thrilled. She walked up to the front of the room to take her place among her USA teammates and was beaming with a smile that will never fade. Along with coach Andy, and coach Kiko who is also US Team coach, we all had tears in our eyes as we witnessed Marin realize her dream of making it to the 2008 games. She stated that as her goal, even after she was diagnosed with brain cancer, and even when she was stricken with paralysis after surgery. And against some pretty incredible odds, Marin has done it. We're obviously so very proud and happy for her, and today, frankly, we're a bit blown away. Since that moment it's been a whirlwind. After the announcement where each team member was introduced and given a USA hockey jersey with their name and 08 on the back, we began the process of getting ready for the long journey by filling out piles of paperwork. We are submitting two sets as Nancy has been named as a special assistant to the team and will travel along with Marin every step of the way. We were excited to learn that the team's pre-Olympic camp prior to the games will be held in beatuiful Okinawa, Japan (here we come, Oki Swim Mom) and not Korea as was previously stated. The announcement was followed by a nice photo opportunity for the media and families and the happy, smiling faces of everyone in the room was just wonderful. Then, after a brief pause to check out of the hotel, the team was loaded on a bus and taken to the Minneapolis Metrodome where the US Paralympic Swim Team was honored before the game between the Twins and the Royals. Everyone on the team (including Nancy) surrounded the pitchers mound while a video ran on the stadium big screen TV's. Then one member, Justin Zook, threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the baseball game and the crowd gave the US team a standing ovation as they left the field, with a few of the Royals giving them pats on the back. It was a really cool scene and we were so proud that Marin was a part of it. From the ballpark, it was quickly off to the airport where our friend Brett Cohn was a hero getting Marin & Nancy to their flight on time. Without much time to begin spreading the good news, calls and text messages of congratulations started coming in. We are so appreciative of the love and support and as we continue on this amazing journey with Marin. It's been a whirlwind weekend and we're all still spinning a little bit. It's been a long time since I posted anything about my hero. Marin Morrison is in Minneapolis this week and will be participating in the Para Olympic Trials on Friday and Saturday. Join us in wishing her all the best by going to her website and writing a note to her. :notworthy::cheerleader: www.caringbridge.org/.../ If you haven’t been keeping up, she is partly paralyzed on her right side. Since December she has been dealing with a lot of dizziness and nausea. It’s annoying for her at best and at worst, keeps her out of the pool some days and therefore not training. She’s had tests and scans but doctors can’t figure out why she’s having these symptoms. SO, even with the dizziness and nausea, this powerful, strong willed young lady is going to fight her way into the Para Olympic games in Beijing, China this year. Please write her a note of encouragement and let her know that USMS is behind her all the way. Below is the latest journal entry by her mother. Thursday, April 3, 2008 4:18 AM CDT Hi Everyone, We can't even begin to express how much we appreciate all the notes of encouragement that we read here in Marin's guestbook every day, particurly this week. She had a good day Wednesday, spending most of her time simply relaxing and getting rest, or doing her best not to feel sick. On this day it was a success. Marin's most troublesome issue right now is simply feeling well; she wakes up dizzy and does her best to take in the nutrition she needs daily. But she continues with an amazingly good attitiude. Marin received a care package that included some wristbands that are designed to off-set her naseau and while it's early, we choose to believe they're working. She's also wearing an eye-patch to compat her symptoms of double-vision. It's not flattering, but it's helping. Right now it's all about feeling as well as she can... the plan is to rise early Thursday, get to the pool as she'll need to Friday, get acclimated to the early schedule, and do her best. The excitement of the event is intoxicating and we are all enjoying this lifetime event. We have a great appreciation for the fact that so many others are coming along with us and riding the emotional waves with us. Please know we are honored to share this all with you. I'm so extremely proud of Marin! She has proven once again what an enduring spirit she has. I've reprinted this article from Swimming World online. Those of you who have followed her story...read this and be amazed! Jessica Long Highlights Great GTAC Disability Open/National Deaf Games Meet -- April 17, 2007 ROCHESTER, Michigan, April 17. SULLIVAN award winner Jessica Long provided one of the brightest of many inspirational performances at the GTAC Disability Open/National Deaf Games held April 13-15 in Rochester, Mich., on the campus of Oakland University. Long set a pair of world records in the S8 division with wins in the 200 and 1500 free. Meanwhile, Marcus Titus, a deaf swimmer competing for the Pan American and World Deaf Championship Team, set four American records in the S15 class in the 50, 100 and 200 *** as well as the 50 fly. Additionally, Marin Morrison, a first-time Paralympic performer who had been a Junior National qualifier prior to suffering from a debilitating brain tumor, set American and Pan-American standards in the 50 back and 50 fly. Wednesday, November 22, 2006 10:01 AM CST Tuesday's appointment with a neurologist at Children' Hospital went well as we were able to begin getting an idea of how to look forward from here. It's strange that this was our first meeting with an actual neurologist since we moved to Seattle. We had seen other in the neurology department, but they were nurse practitioners and we had to keep pounding on the door to see an actual specialist. Our concern has been Marin's medications; what's still necessary and what changes might be needed as we go forward. Essentially, the doctor confirmed that her two primary medications to prevent seizures were still necessary and the supplements she's taking seem to be in good balance. One concern is how the long-term use of some of these seizure drugs could affect her liver, so we'll be monitoring that. After the appointment (rather early in the AM) Marin enjoyed a good long nap (something we all need now and again!). She worked with therapists in the afternoon and with her teacher Ashley in the evening. And then Marin even learned something from Michael, the little man that Mom refers to as 'a jumping bean' decedided he needed to teach his big sis how to jump in the air. And to our amazement, Marin bent herself at the knees, with her brace on her right ankle and foot and launched herself up off the ground to the delight of us all! She got pretty good air, too. The giant smile on her face told us she was just as thrilled as we were. It's amazing how a such a little act can be so satisfying. It really was impressive and an indication that at least she has good strength in the muscles that are working in her right leg. I had to share an awesome update on Marin!!!! She is swimming and COMPETING again. She can only swim with one arm but that doesn't stop her. She just recently swam in her High School State Meet in the para-athlete division and did great! She was the only girl competing and still placed 3rd and 5th out of 7 despite a round of chemo the week leading into the meet!!! There is a video of her competing at a hs dual meets on You tube. I can't get the link to work but if you go to www.youtube.com then type in "Super Marin! Juanita vs. Eastlake - September 29, 2006" in the search you will find it. She is a very courageous young lady! She was definitely on the road to the Olympics before this awful brain tumor. Despite swimming with one arm in the video, you can get a glimpse of her beautiful backstroke form. I just read this post after receiving some bad health news about my cousin. This young woman's story gave me a much needed lift. Good luck to her for a speedy and full recovery and pray for her family to continue to find strength to support her. Take care.
