I don&#39;t see any reason why somebody could not swim but I suspect that the artificial pieces might wear out more quickly with a lot of overhead use. The procedure I saw was a replacement of the humeral head and the glenoid fossa I believe. I wish your friend the best of luck and I suspect that his ortho should be able to answer the questions about post operative activity.<div style="clear:both;"></div>
