Wonder if we&#39;re going to see a new record in the 100 free?
It&#39;s possible on paper
add a second to 18.74 and you get 19.74,
then add 1.5 to that you get 21.24
19.74 + 21.24 = 40.98
Works on paper,
lets see how reality plays out tonight.

I&#39;m curious how he trained to swim that fast.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Men's 2005 Div 1 NCAA championships

Actually any one of the 8 has a chance tonight.

Absolutely. Less than 0.3 seconds separate 1-8. Less than one second between 1-16!! It&#39;s really anyone&#39;s race. I bet Bousquet will be under 20 seconds. Can he bring it home, though?<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Men's 2005 Div 1 NCAA championships

This morning I thought that Stanford might have a slight chance to catch Auburn. The were behind by 52 after Day 1 and cut that to 38. They did not swim as well as Auburn today and had a hugh loss with Andy Gant getting a DQ in the 200 Back after taking 3rd in the 200 Free. They are going to have to win the 100 Free and 200 *** and hope Auburn gets a DQ someplace. Not likely to happen. Auburn will win 3 straight but will do it by 50 to 70 points.

In the 200 Back tonight I believe Ryan Lochet will win it but won&#39;t break his record from the SEC championships. I believe &quot;Saving Swimmer Ryan&quot; is actually not fully tapered and is actually saving himself next week for the WC trials. He will make up for the 100 Back loss.

Gary Marshall is going to need a win for Stanford to have any hope but I think lightening can strike twice for Northwestern in 47 years and I will pick Mike Alexandrov to win in a very close race with Polyakov from Alabama.

Can a University of Kentucky swimmer win an NCAA title? I don&#39;t know if they ever have but Daniel Cruz has a legit shot tonight. He tied Davis Tarwater from Michigan today and one of those guys will win tonight.

I make Cal a slight favorate tonight in the 400 Free Relay because they will probably substitute Duje for someone and they have been hot in relays.

I pick Peter Vanderkaay to win the 1650 Free in a close race with Lars Jensen.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Men's 2005 Div 1 NCAA championships

Hi Ande:

The performance last night had to be Peter Vanderkaay in the 500 Free going 4:09.82 and winning by 4.53 seconds. That is the second fastest swim all time. Ryan Lochet brought is time down to reduce his record and will provide an interesting race next week against Phelps. Fred Bousquet still remains the only man under 19 but at least got a challenge from Duje Draganja at :19.01 which would have broke the old record. Duje seems to come up short by .02 and 01 when I see him swim. The relay was different for Duje and Cal as they did break 1:16.00 which Auburn hit exactly. Having Milorad Cavic on the relay made the difference. His relay split was the same as Bousquet at 18.64.

Tonights races will be interesting. The 200 Medley Relay is up for grabs with 1.5 seconds between 1st thru 8th. My two to watch are Stanford and Cal with Cal having the slight edge. The 400 IM shoud be a WAR with 4 experienced guys in the picture with Margalis, Shanteau, Mortimer, and Mellouli. I will go with Margalis.
The last time someone broke the 50 free 20 second barrier was Joe Bottom and he won the 100 Fly that year. I am going to pick Fred to do it this year from his lucky lane 8. That is the lane he swam in last year when he won the 50 Free and broke the World Record. He is capable because he did have the fastest split in the 50 fly from the Medley Relay prelims. Since he got 6th last year this would be an upset.

Simon Burnett is my pick to win the 200 Free and I wonder if he will match his time from earlier in the year and possibly break the new, less than a month record by Michael Phelps. Matt Biondi&#39;s record is the oldest NCAA record in history and he has held that for 20 years. I pick Ryan Lochet to win the 100 Back in a close race with Matt Grevers. I think he has a shot at Neil Walkers record. Gary Marshall is my pick for the 100 ***.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Men's 2005 Div 1 NCAA championships

prelims have started

The 500 free will be a great race but I don&#39;t think anyone can touch that 4:08 in this meet. Breaking 4:10 would be incredible enough. Wonder why Dolan never put it together to beat Perkins in the 400? Also agree that Vanderkaay is the logical pick but will be rooting for our local guy Justin Mortimer (Milton MA and MA Bay Marlins) also Tobias Work (Cape Cod Swim Club). Had the pleasure seeing Tobias seem a 1650 at last year&#39;s NE open AFTER he jumped the start. Thought that would never happend again until Erik Vendt (BC High and Ocean State Squids) did the same thing a few weeks later at Nationals. One of the things I heard about Tom Dolan was that at the 1995 NCAA meet his astma did not effect him at all. The meet was in Indy and University of Michigan won the NCAA Championship and that was there first since 1961. Tom Dolan had probably the best meet of his career and still has 2 American Records from that meet still on the books. He never had problems during the whole meet and set records in the 500 Free, 1650 Free, and 400 IM.

I also heard that one of the reasons he would &quot;hit the water with his fist after a good swim and winning&quot; was that is asthma would act up during the races and he could hardly breath. This happened after then first day in Atlanta and he was pretty much finished doing well after the 400 IM. By the time he would face Perkins in the 400 Free he was pretty much out of it. In fact I don&#39;t think he made consols in the 400 Free in the 1996 Olympics.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Men's 2005 Div 1 NCAA championships

Thanks Bob. When I started by post there was nothing up on the 50 Free. I didn&#39;t think I was that slow or there just swimming FAST. Fred just absolutely smoked everyone in that 50 Free. 18.74 vs 19.30 is pretty will attest to that. Can he do it again tonight and will others go with him under 19 seconds. Kind of reminds me when Joe Bottom broke 20 seconds and Gary Schatz when with him as well.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Men's 2005 Div 1 NCAA championships

Ande:

I think the 500 Free and 200 IM will be a WAR. Everyone in the top 8 is within range to win. My picks tonight are Peter Vanderkaay in the 500 and Ryan Lochet in the 200 IM. However Justin Mortimer and Eric Shanteau could be suprises. Will Tom Dolan&#39;s record of 4:08 .75 from 1995 be challenged? If not will someone go under 4:10.00?

I wonder if 1:16.00 will be broken tonight for the relay (4 x19) or 19 seconds for the 50 Free? Will Tom Jager/Anthony Ervin&#39;s time of 19.05 be finally broken? Will another Cal swimmer get a sprint record and keep the tradition going. (Biondi, Ervin, ?). I think either Cal or Auburn will break 1:16.00. Great splits from Fred Bousquet (18.66) and Duje Draganja (18.82). I thought that Michael Cavic would be on the relay but that Evan Lane did a 19.26 so they don&#39;t lose that much. I look for either of those teams to win but they will only be eligible to get a US Open Record. I slightly favor Cal.

I don&#39;t think Texas can win the NCAA and it would be a miracle if they did. From the 2004 NCAA Championship, they lost 239.5 points and had only 134.5 points returning. In contrast to Auburn, they had 230.5 points lost but have 403.5 points returning. Big difference.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Men's 2005 Div 1 NCAA championships

very impressive how close the top 5 are in the 500

Last year they lost
aaron piersol, brendan hansen, and ian crocker
who racked up a lot of points in individual events and relays

I&#39;m sure some obsessed person has calculated the points going in. the meet begins at 1:00 pm eastern time, 11 minutes to go

hope the gophers make prompt web updates
