You're body adapts to training methods and if you warm-up diffently from that then you may not swim to the best of your ability.

Remember we train to race so your training sessions will be based on this.

RE: warm-up speed before competition

I think your initial idea has some real merit. For myself, sprints before a race help me "wind up". Whats even more important is getting lots of easy swimming done between events. Once loose, I've got to stay loose, and meets are tough on that.

RE: warm-up speed before competition

My best event for me was always the 200 back. i'm also a 200 backstroker (and strangely enough, also a 100 freestyler...) but for the meets that i'm concentrating on my 200 back, i warm up the same way as eyeore.

however, i have teammates that need to use the whole hour warmup period to feel ready to race, and i have other teammates who refuse to do more than 500 yards before they swim. some like to do lots of kicking, others don't do any at all (i personally do at least 200 yards of it...)

so it really is a question of how you feel. there's no right or wrong answer- what is right for one person can be totally wrong for another...

RE: warm-up speed before competition

on warming up

the trick is to warm up with out getting worn out
it's a bad idea to work too hard in a meet warm up
it's ok to do a few sprints but
be sure you conserve your energy for your race.

If your event is the 100
It's not a good idea to do hard 50's
race pace 25's will suffice
also practice a few turns at race speed
to get used to going and turning that fast

warm down plenty between sprints

if your event is the 500
you might want to do some pace
50's or 100's

most of what you do in meet warm ups should be
slow easy swimming with perfect technique

Or would that be a bad idea since obviously you can excess with too much of race-pace swims and be a little tired for a competition swim?
My guess is that would help for 50 and 100 but not more than that? How do you do it?
P.S. I am still braving up for my first meet, so sorry if some of the questions are stupid or too obvious ...

RE: warm-up speed before competition

You have asked the most individual question in swimming, namely whats the best warm-up. The best warm-up is what works for you. That said,it is bad to have lactic acid in your muscles before a race so you need to finish any sprinting at least 30 min. before your race. I have been told to not sprint more than 25 M in warm up to avoid depleting muscle glycogen. I am not sure about that as my second event of the day is often better than my first. Try different warm-ups at different meets and talk to competitors about what they do. Mostly just go to a meet and have fun!
