I am not trying to be a jerk, but you really don&#39;t know what you are talking about. There are plenty of pro surfers, from NC, that have made a very good living by surfing. The comment about boogie boards and rubber raft&#39;s also shows that you don&#39;t know what you are talking about. You can ride a much small wave with a longboard than a boogie board or raft.

Also, the college in Wrightsville was listed as on eo fthe top surfing colleges in the nation by Surfer Magazine. Do you think those guys might know something about surfing?

Maybe you should actually have some experience in the subject area before spouting off. NC isn&#39;t Hawaii or California, but it does get decent waves on a fairly consent basis, excluding the summer of course.

I&#39;ve never lived in NC, but I could look out my bedroom window, and most other windows in my house, and see the beach and Atlantic Ocean. I have visited many of the beaches in the Carolinas and found them very similar to the one I grew up on. Depending on the season and weather conditions the waves are usually 3, 4 and maybe 5 feet. Surfable, yes, good surfing, no!

The largest wave(s) I ever remember seeing was in 1964 as Hurricane Dora approached the north Florida, south Georgia area. Several hours before the storm made landfall I went down on the beach with several friends-- there was already debrit on the beach the waves had washed in and one wave had something that looked like a telephone poll turning it end over end. Here is a link to the storm surge created by Dora on Amelia Island, FL. At first glance you don&#39;t really realize what you are looking at, it looks like there are large waves right behind the houses, but look further in the background at the wave and then at the size of the houses. How far away was the photographer for the houses to look that small? I&#39;ve often wondered if this pic is real or if it has been doctored. If it is real, it scares me to death to think that my family and I didn&#39;t evacuate but rode out Hurricane Dora. Just thought you all might like to see this pic.

While I appreciate your support I must, unfortunatley, fall upon my own sword and give Horn his due.

I spoke with my neighbor and have surfing news to report. It seems that recently, while in waist deep water at the college of wrightsville bait n&#39; tackle satellite campus, a huge wave came crashing over him causing a small amount of water to enter his beer can, rendering it undrinkable. This immense wave was so high that even when he bent his knees and lept skyward 12 inches he could not fully get his beer above the foaming cauldron of an angry Atlantic ocean. Not only was his beer fouled but his swim trunks actually slipped slightly downward.

Many know the Outer Banks as &quot; The Graveyard of the Atlantic.&quot; I propose to my aquatic brethren that we rename The Barrier Islands &quot; The Graveyard of Beer.&quot;<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: surfing

Horn:

It&#39;s obvious you have spent a great deal of time both at Wrightsville Beach and NC in general. How else would you know the University of North Carolina at Wilmington actually goes by the name of college of wrightsville? Maybe I have been confused my whole life into thinking the &quot;W&quot; stands for Wilmington when it really stands for wrightsville beach. I&#39;ll go ask my next door neighbor, his daughter goes to UNCW and he has a house there.

So, if you want to call me a jerk please feel free. Just be sure to get your facts right as well.

The barrier islands in NC are beautiful, along with the Outer Banks. However, as far a surfing mecca, you are far from finding decent waves in NC. Of course, someone from Texas would be the ultimate authority on that, right?<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: surfing

I went swimming in the North Sea In South Shields in July-August last year and I thought it was a quite bit colder than the water in Catalina Bay in the Pacific and that was 65 degrees in August. Actually, North Carolina has some good waves and has produced a fair amount of pro surfers. Probably the best surf on the East Coast. Because the waves break further out on the East coast they often seem smaller than they really are, but don&#39;t be fooled. I can&#39;t tell you how many times I have seen NC going off the hook. However, as with most places (including California), it is usually flat in the summer. Either you have only been there in the summer, or haven&#39;t been as often as you say, because NC gets some good waves in the fall, winter and spring.

Sparx,

Your not supposed to be fighting the waves. It is a lot easier when you go with the flow and let the waves do all the work, including finding rip tides and waiting between sets before paddling out.

1. The waves are puny, small and more suited for a canvas raft or a boogie board.
2. Lots of kids buy surfboards and paddle about, mostly be the piers. Lots more put them on jeeps to impress the fairer sex.
3. There are always occasions where a medium sized wave will pop up but that is far from the norm, far far from the norm.
4. If you exclude hurricane induced waves, the # of good wave days is even smaller. I bet you can catch a doozy during a hurricane.
5. It&#39;s only 60 miles to the gulf stream in many places. Now that&#39;s some quality fishing.

I&#39;m sure there are all sorts of pro surfers from NC, surfing by day, delivering pizzas to the tourists by night to suppor their pro careers.
