I would say to keep excerising with weights. but to stay away from heavy weights. stay with moderate weights. maybe 60% of your body weight. Also try free hand excerise. Such as chins dips pushups rope climbing etc. One important excerise is a must Ab work.:) ;)

RE: weight training and swimming ability

I have been working out since October in prep for the World Master's. I have seen a huge improvement in my times, all except for my sprints. I haven't been doing much weight, but lots of reps. Not that I was ever very strong to begin with, I can only do 120 or so on the bench, I might be able to do more but haven't tried. I have seen lots of my times come down, especially the longer events, the 1000 yards came down about 45 seconds, my 500 came down almost 20, my 200IM has come down 5-6 seconds as well. I haven't been in the gym as much lately, only once so far this week. I hope it keeps up as I really need to drop a bit more before June.

RE: weight training and swimming ability

Just depends on what you're training for. When I train distance, if I don't weight train, I don't see much of a difference. If I'm training for sprint events, I'll quickly notice a change in my times.
