He came to me in football shape, about 30 pounds overweight, not looking like swimmers do. High school boy swimmers all have 6 packs by the time they are seniors, broad shoulders, you know.

This guy comes in about a month after football is over, more talent in his little pinky. I mainly worked on his turns, his butterfly and his push off on freestyle. I even worked on his breaststroke, did a lot of body dolphin butterfly. He drove with a couple of his classmates 60 miles to my clinics. He was a true joy to coach. All he did at California CIF Championships is win the 50 in 21 low or 20 high, can't remember, win the 100 in 45 and anchor his free relay to a win, plus swimming a great leg of fly in the medley relay. I think he did 22 high on that leg. Not bad for a swimmer who only swam 3 months a year.

His only problem was he was too talented, was starting end on the high school championship team. He was a leader, even beat the strongest lineman in an arm wrestling match!!! Super flexible, almost double jointed.

RE: Men's Div I NCAA

Connie,
They may have been born there, but our coaches made them, our colleges educate them. Still they will make for a fun and exciting Olympics.

Two years ago I had a high school senior same age as Michael Cavic. My swimmer was a high school football player, swam 3-4 months a year, he went up to Cavic who was one of the greatest high school swimmers ever, and asked him if he swims year round!!!!!!!! If my swimmer swam year round he could be as good as Cavic.

Actually, I ws reading Draganja's biography, he was a Jr National team captain in Croatia, throughout highschool.
He only came to the US in college, so lot of his swimming base was learned over there.

The other Milorad Cavic was born in Anaheim, to Yugoslavian parents. Old country genetics, US upbringing.

Still, body style and talent wise, there are a few of them back home, lot of tall very athletic people where I come from.
Not that I think they're 'better than...' but this just reminded me of a discussion not too long ago where I mentioned that swimming is one of the more prominent sports back home (in popularity) and several people were rather skeptical of that statement.

I'm glad they're over here, because there is a lot more resources here to bring the best out of their natural potential. They wouldn't have the same opportunity back home. Well, In part, it 's the same reason I came to this country. Lots of opportunities, and I'm making the best of them.

RE: Men's Div I NCAA

Duje was the defending champ in the 100FR. Needless to say he didn't look to happy after the race. Also CAL won the B final-the kid was a freshman and he was a monster-must have been around 6'7" and looked like he could be a defensive end!

Oh, I didn't see the camera on him after the race.
I did notice that he was ranked 3rd in NCAA in 50 free, just earlier this year. Crocker is ranked somewhere in teens on that same sheet, If I remember right.

Crocker was on fire today :)

RE: Men's Div I NCAA

Connie,

Yes but while Kirk's stroke is powerful looking short course it does not translate as well to long course and she has a tendency to not have good second half swims long course. I'm sure her coach will work on making adjustments for the OT we're she'll be up against some formidable and experienced LC competitors.

RE: Men's Div I NCAA

Crocker's underwater distance off the start/turns in the 100 FR was amazing-he used his fly kick to destroy the field!

RE: Men's Div I NCAA

here he is:

By his medley relay performance where he was faster than some of the freestylers at 48.62 I think he may go 49 low. His coach said he went out too fast in a 21.9!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

His splits of 21.9 and 26.72 indicated he went out WAY too fast and died a little bit. Say he goes out in 23.0 and comes back in 26.0, a 3 second difference is more like it.

The 100 free will be good. Don't count out Bovell, either. He split a 46.5 in the relay last night! There are plenty of other guys who could take it, too, including Bousquet who won the 50 pretty convincingly.

RE: Men's Div I NCAA

Crocker just went :49.77 in the 100 FLY prelims

New individual world records in the 50 free and 200 IM (Bousquet and Bovell). Bousquet only made it into the 'A' final by winning a swim-off! Fastest time ever recorded in the 200 free relay (Auburn), and three (!) teams under the old world record in the 400 medley relay with Texas winning in a 3:25.38. All the splits for Texas were incredible, but Crocker's fly leg at 48.6 was two seconds faster than anyone else in the pool. That's domination, folks.

The other race tonight was the 400 free, where Michigan went 1-2 with Vanderkaay and Ketchum. This was the only event where a world record was not set, but Vanderkaay swam very impressively (3:40.78 including a pretty phenomenal 54.3 on his last 100) and missed Carvin's American record by a tenth of a second.

Psyche sheets are slightly different than heat sheets.
Psyche shhets show competitors grouped by events, ordered by their entered time.

Heat sheets actually show the lane asignments, ordered by the lane they swimin, which is not the same as if you ordered people by their entered times, from fastest to slowest.

RE: Men's Div I NCAA

Maybe this is a dumb question, but why are they called "Psyche Sheets" and not something like "Seeding Sheets"?
