It&#39;s L&#39;Oreal Kids swim and sport shampoo. It comes in a blue container with an orange top. I give it a chance to work while I soap up in the shower. It works -- no more stiff frizzy hair. The best part is that 9oz. costs $2.64 at Target. It&#39;s one of those products that&#39;s always going on sale. P.S. I never wear a swim cap because I get too hot (my pool is kept warm for kids and seniors) and before finding the kids shampoo, I was beginning to rival Kramer in the hair department. Go for it. ---Carl

After reading Tom Ellison&#39;s brilliant discussion on VO2Max and hair cair :D , I am wondering what people are using to keep their hair from becoming straw. I did a search of threads, but they were either green hair or dry skin, not quite what I&#39;m looking for.

Wearing a cap during practice is impractical. I&#39;ve been hit in the head a few too many times, so the cap isn&#39;t large enough to stay on. :p

I&#39;m guessing that most people will recommend UltraSwim or MalibuC (those were stocked at the local Kiefers). What I&#39;m wondering is, are there any good products I would find in the *supermarket*. I saw a lot of products. Unfortunately, the packaging wasn&#39;t very, uh, manly.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Conditioner for dead hair?

As long as you keep your cap on. ;) You can smell (and sometimes taste, bleh!) when conditioner gets into the practice pool.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Conditioner for dead hair?

I have swam for many years and much to my own disgust I have not found a single really good product to make my hair silky again. The best thing I&#39;ve got going right now is to make sure my hair is totally wet before I get into the poor and to put a generous amount of conditioner in my hair before I put the cap on. I hate to wear the caps but it really does make a difference! Much luck to you and your quest. :)<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Conditioner for dead hair?

I&#39;ve tried using both Ultra Swim and Swimmer&#39;s Choice. I think they may actually work as advertised, although I think the Swimmer&#39;s Choice is a bit better. But neither is good enough for me to justify the price. But, then, I&#39;m cheap. :) I also see few people using these products.

I have found that Ultra Swim and Swimmer&#39;s Choice are available as cheap samplers (I found them in a drug store. Shops specializing in swimming or sports equipment might have them, too.) The Ultra Swim had both shampoo and conditioner in one pack, the Swimmer&#39;s Choice was just a tube of shampoo. If you can find samplers locally, you can try for relatively little risk.

I once saw a guy using a L&#39;Oreal children&#39;s swim shampoo, which he claimed to like. If nothing else, it&#39;s less expensive than Ultra Swim, and will help you get in touch with your inner child. :D

Most of the time, I&#39;ve used a cheap shampoo and conditioner, or a combination in one like Pert. (Except, actually, I use the just-as-good store equivalent. Like I said, I&#39;m cheap.) These work for me, although I should note that I don&#39;t spend hours in the pool every day. But, I found these options good enough in the past when I did swim almost every day, for more than an hour.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Conditioner for dead hair?

I&#39;ve had good results using a product called Inner Shampoo, which is available from Life Enhancement at:

<a href="http://www.life-enhancement.com/LE/product.asp?SID=1&amp;id=48">www.life-enhancement.com/.../product.asp</a>

I hadn&#39;t realized just how much it was benefiting me until I accidently allowed myself to run out of it and substituted a well-known store brand. I found that my hair had instantly become a mass of tangles, and I had to spend several minutes separating the tangles with my fingers before I could get a comb through it! But as soon as I went back to Inner Shampoo, my hair became its manageable self again.

Inner Shampoo takes some getting used to, because it&#39;s a non-lathering shampoo, and you comb it into your hair and then rinse with a comb. But it works well!<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Conditioner for dead hair?

wet the hair for a long time, and then rub in Alberto VO5 hairdressing formula.

the problem with conditioning hair with a detangler or something before getting in, is that it will just rinse right out in the pool. The v05 hairdressing formual will not rinse out, but will shampoo out. It is inexpensive, and comes in a tube that isn&#39;t feminie at all--so you won&#39;t be embarrassed by the packaging. In fact, it&#39;s black, with a masculine gold color on it.

Also, the cheaper brands of shampoo really are the best for removing chlorine...the reason is that they have more detergent in them, and it&#39;s also a little stronger than the more expensive brands. With the V05, you will not have chlorine soak into you hair anymore...and the &quot;cheap&quot; shampoo will remove any that did soak in. Maybe use it once a week. AGain, Alberto V05, extra body, is really good for this--and is only like a dollar.

Afterwards though, it is imperitive to condition your hair, as the shampoo can promote some dryness--Pantene is the best drug store brand to buy, and you can purchase the extra moisturizing to get nice soft hair. Pantene has silicone in it, wich is excellent for repairing damage, smoothing the cuticle of the hair to make it shiny. Also, the Pantene bottle is really neutral. It&#39;s white, without flowers or any girly stuff on it. It&#39;s logo is also more technical looking than other brands. No embarrasement, and terrific hair!

It will do wonders for your skin and hair. It also removes even the most waterproof sunscreens (e.g. Bullfrog) very gently and thoroughly. True castile soap does not lather all that well, but that does not affect its cleansing and moisturizing powers.

Full Disclosure: I actually make (&amp; sell) such a soap, but my output is already completely taken, so I&#39;m not trying to sell you anything.

Or maybe it is and this wet your hair first really doesn&#39;t work. Anyone know why?

The definition of osmosis:
Diffusion of fluid through a semipermeable membrane from a solution with a low solute concentration to a solution with a higher solute concentration until there is an EQUAL concentration of fluid on both sides of the membrane

Yeah, it&#39;s sticky. I just had a mental image of my flamboyant transgendered hairstylist a couple of years ago putting his, er, HER hands into my hair for the first time, then snatching them out almost immediately and planting them firmly on her hips, saying, &quot;Ew! You&#39;ve been SWIMMING lately HAVEN&#39;T you?&quot; For the next half hour, between strange one-sided conversations about whether Britney Spears or Madonna was more talented, she intermittently scolded me for not taking better care of my hair.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Conditioner for dead hair?

I will definitely be trying some of the suggestions in these replies over the next few weeks. Shakey, you need to create you own thread. But instead of weekly workout posts, it should be short stories from the mosh pit (pool) or the barber&#39;s chair! :)

What really killed my hair was going to the outdoor pool (quarry) and not showering until much later, after I had already dried out. (Hello, temperature control for the showers? I&#39;m not trying to boil an egg. )

I don&#39;t like to cut my hair too short. I&#39;ve got a scar in back, when I slipped off a starting block and got stitches. (I was 7. Don&#39;t ask what I was doing on the block, before I fell backwards. :p )<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Conditioner for dead hair?

The best simple advice has been given by fishgrrl. Wet you hair first in the shower. The water will fill the hair shafts and make it a bit more diffucult for chlorine to seep in. After you swim use a conditioner..any kind. Belive it or not hair stylists can tell if people swim in pools with chlorine capless. How ? by the feel of the hair in some way. A cap is the best protection but there not for everyone. The silicon ones are small for lots of men , there are some other caps for men however. See my page Swim Caps and Hair Care and you will see some men with two color caps. These are designed for colder water swimming but also protect hair. You will have to scroll down some what on the page its at the bottom, As much info on swim hair as you will find on the web! For swimmers and water exercisers !
