Many of us either swam years ago as kids or took up the sport as adults and have workout for several years. As for your age, 500 yards for someone near the beginning is pretty good. You would need to take time building yardage compared to people under 50 years old.. I started out very slow, when I came back into swimming as little as 200 yards. And because of work-having to change jobs, I did low yardage between 500 to about 1,800 for about 3 years about 2 times a week.
