This whole story is ridiculous. Some girls' suits ride up, others' don't. Who cares? Should a guy get DQed if you can see his butt crack?

Totally agree with the Anchorage School District's position:

Well, per the diagram I saw attached to one article, yes, a male swimmer could be DQ'd for plumber's crack, as the rule illustrated required suits to cover the buttocks entirely. Should he be is less relevant than would he be. Likely, no one would notice unless some chap's entire ass was hanging out. The fact that a female swimmer's purported cheek generates complaints, where a male's at the same meet wouldn't, is sexism in action. Adult men AND women are viewing a minor female athlete as having an ulterior sexual motive, not as an athlete paying more attention to her performance than her suit fit.

RE: DQ overturned

So I read that the official has been dismissed and the DQ overturned.

That said, another point missed completely on this thread so far is that the suit was a team issued suit. The same cut doesn't work on every body type, obviously. The no boobs/butts girls can wear a suit one way and the ones who are "curvier" have issues with it and vice versa. The school, IMO, also shoulders some of the responsibility going forward. If they require a certain look, then it should have a few alternative cuts for different butts.

RE: DQ overturned

From an official's standpoint, since I wasn't present, I can't and don't want to comment on the call.

That being said:

The NFHS did make the suit rule a formal Point of Emphasis this year, no doubt influenced by the SafeSport and USA Swimming Minor Athlete Abuse Prevention Policy (MAAPP) initiatives. Specifically, NFHS Rule 3.3 Art. 2. That rule says that "Females shall wear suits which cover the buttocks and breasts and shall not extend beyond the shoulders or below the top of the knee cap, nor cover the neck." That's it. Obviously subject to interpretation and people reading what they want to into it.

As officials, our primary responsibility is to insure fair competition and the safety of the athletes, not to be arbiters of morality or fashion. IMHO, that responsibility should fall back on the athletic directors, coaches and parents.

Ironically, I worked a meet this past week where a poor novice freshman male swimmer had team-issued suit that was several sizes too large. It came about halfway up his chest and came down well past his knees. Technically, it was in violation of the same Rule 3.3 Art 2, but the was no way I was going to DQ the kid. My real fear was that the thing was going to come off in the water...

RE: DQ overturned

Many old jammers are becoming see thru when bent over -- men and women.

RE: DQ overturned

A kid on my age group team around 2001 or 2002 forgot to tie his jammers and they ended up around his knees off the start. He treaded water for a bit while pulling them up and tying them, then continued his race. No DQ that I can remember.

Heck, before I switched to wearing jammers at meets in 2003, I had a drawer full of old meet speedos; one meet, I'd grabbed the wrong speedo and was informed after my first race that while I was bending over on the start, the center couple of inches of the back of the suit was completely see-through, leading to me mooning everyone behind me. No DQ on that race, but I think it was only see-through when it was stretched on the start.

RE: DQ overturned

When I coached H S swimming. Totally agree with the Anchorage School District's position:
the Anchorage School District has concluded that our swimmer was targeted based solely on how a standard, school-issued uniform happened to fit the shape of her body. We cannot tolerate discrimination of any kind, and certainly not based on body shape. This disqualification was heavy-handed and unnecessary

RE: DQ overturned

Gymnastics uses a spray tacky glue on the behinds to keep "weggies" from happening. I dunno. The author, Lauren Langford, in the same article says:

And I am not trying to be political, I hope I don't get that way, but it might come across that way.
1. Stop calling this girl "curvy" the same way you call plus size models like Ashley Graham. CNN had a video of this girl (and her sister) working out, doing resistance training. They are not dainty, but they are FIT. They look pretty darn athletic.
2. We have had 2 girls (both white, FWIW) on our USA team with this issue. Both very fit girls who make Sectional times, one of whom is knocking on the door to Futures and is being recruiting by a Pac-12 school. And guess what.....parents grumble. Parents of the younger kids on the team. The one parent who complained was the mother of a young girl. The official who made the DQ was a lady, as well (presumably also a swim Mom).
3. This isn't about sexism or racism, IMHO. It really irks me that the media has gone out and tried to label it such, as it inherently carries a stigma that may extend to the whole sport in some people's minds. This is about prudish parents (moms, at that!) who likely/presumably never swam competitively in their high school days.
4. The point about about the potential deliberate nature of teh swimmer doing it. I don't think taht is an unfair question to ask. Of the two girls I mentioned earlier on our team, one of them is the kind of girl you want your daughters to become. There is NFW that girl does it intentionally. The other girl I don't think did, but Icouldn't dismiss it.
5. My skinny, small butt daughters have had their suits ride up on them a few times. Which gets to the above point. It can even happen to girls who are not physically built in a way that makes it more likley.

RE: DQ overturned

This has generated a lot of interest from the national media.
