For a beginner A good 50 yard freestyle time is 1/10 or more of a second faster than your personal best I like this. I like it a lot.

I like to think of it this way: if you go and pull the nearest 100 random guys your age off the street, you'll probably beat them all. I'd take that one step further. You go into a random gym/health club with a pool, that's still faster than the overwhelming majority of lap swimmers, regardless of age.

Is 53 seconds OK for the 50 yard freestyle at age 71. Old hippie swimmer asks. You would rank #213 of 219 swimmers in your age group. Keep this in mind though: One third of all adults can't even swim half that distance, so you are already ahead of them! :banana:
