Not going well. Longest I've gone without sucking water is about 10 yards. Usually, it's about five. I'm just doing the most basic exercise with it: lying facedown in fins and kicking.

Should I buy a more forgiving snorkel

RE: Freestyle snorkel is a harsh mistress.Regular snorkel first?

I had never heard of one, but now that I look at them, I like it. IMHO, you could benefit from one, but it is only half the equation. Get a tennis ball, and hold it against your chest with your chin. That'll keep your head down, and probably keep water out of the snorkel. That should get your head positioning correct.

RE: Freestyle snorkel is a harsh mistress.Regular snorkel first?

The freestyle snorkel bites. I missed the part about the freestyle snorkel. I haven't used it but have never heard anything good about it. When the OP mentioned trying a different snorkel I thought he meant a side-mount and that would definitely be no good.

RE: Freestyle snorkel is a harsh mistress.Regular snorkel first?

It does take time and yards to get used to NOT turning your head so as to keep water out.

RE: Freestyle snorkel is a harsh mistress.Regular snorkel first?

There was another whole thread recently about the snorkel. Get the regular one as own said.

RE: Freestyle snorkel is a harsh mistress.Regular snorkel first?

Maybe your head position is too low, or too high depending on the angle of the snorkel. My snorkel gives instant feedback (water in the tube) when my head position is too low, which is my natural inclination.

RE: Freestyle snorkel is a harsh mistress.Regular snorkel first?

I mean, obvious question, but... are you sure you have it on right?

RE: Freestyle snorkel is a harsh mistress.Regular snorkel first?

Patrick W. Just suck it up. Yes, there's a learning curve, but you'll get used to it. Just don't give up on it!
