We got shut down from our previous 4 lanes that are rented to our club to 2 lanes. This left me in a bind.

Excellent coach.

You had guys who were young (20's), all the same speed/talent. They went into one lane

RE: Triathlete swimmers - pool etiquette

Ley us know how things improve in the future. They had a different proposal, thought it over, and decided it wouldn't fit in with my goals and needs. I did make sure my dues were paid up and have already gotten my change of clubs in to the state club.

That will also give me opportunities to swim with others when there is a meet coming up. We had 2 teams in November at my club, 1 women and 1 men. 1 woman and 3 men, so no relays.

Thanks all. I'll see about rejoining when there is more lanes/time available. This way the 1 lane the club has is open to whoever shows up and I can spend the time actually getting practice in. Appreciate everyone's comments.

RE: Triathlete swimmers - pool etiquette

You asked my opinion in a PM, and I replied; however, I am just now getting to this thread. Both of them just got in and started, when I don't know. I always ask people/talk to them first before getting in a lane, but these guys never did that. I stopped in the middle of the lane and saw one of them after I got passed the first time. I looked around and that's when I got told by the faster guy we have to circle swim. I said that's not going to work (I've seen this before) and they said it has to. Hmmm, didn't announce themselves, plus I've been a member since the group began, you tell me it has to work that way ... ?

Actually I've got to side with them on this point. In a team setting the standard is to circle swim. Most people don't want their workout interrupted, so they shouldn't need to stop you. If up till that point you've been swimming down the middle of the lane they should do something to make sure you know they're getting in, but as soon as you see someone else in your lane you need to start circle swimming. That's the etiquette.

On the other hand it sounds like they were not doing the workout as written or stated. People do this in masters, but they should definitely let you know they're going to modify the set, and certainly make sure they stay out of your way when you're doing the set as given by the coach. And they definitely need to make room for you at the walls.

RE: Triathlete swimmers - pool etiquette

2 lanes seems like a small amount. How many lanes are there 4 - 5 - 6 - 8? The coach should make some team talk concerning test issues. Yes, if they are passing you , they should lead.
why are they stopping when you are doing a flip turn?

RE: Triathlete swimmers - pool etiquette

One of the main sets were 6x50 :15 rest and 9x100 :20 rest. The larger guy took about 6 of those times where he would leave behind me, and I'd see him on my left after the flags. Neither of them can flip turn. This guy would do an open turn on the left, and I'm trying to go in the middle and to the right, per etiquette. At least as far as I knew. My turns would be jammed or whatever, and didn't appear to care. Then at the end, he and the other guy would break and face the blocks, not the lane lines. So more than a few times I'm hitting someone because I don't have 1/3 of the middle to try and flip and move to the right to circle swim.

My first question is why did you continue to go first if these other guys were consistently passing you? Was that your choice or theirs? I think you should make it clear to them that if they are passing you they should be leading.

On top of this a couple of times they tried to talk to me at the 15 or 20 second break. I didn't say anything or respond. If you need longer rest intervals, not a problem, but not when I'm less than 3 weeks away from a heavy meet. I need to practice.

You may be taking things a little too seriously. I think you can probably make it pretty clear that you're winded and don't really want to engage in a conversation during the rest period without outright ignoring them.

RE: Triathlete swimmers - pool etiquette

The coach on deck should have intervened, but keep in mind lots of people aren't comfortable confronting people like that.

RE: Triathlete swimmers - pool etiquette

I concur...regardless if the lane is in a circle swim mode, or just a second swimmer getting in for side-by-side swimming...the new arrival should make sure everyone already in the lane knows that he's getting in. I will light people up for this because I've had head-on collisions and it doesn't feel good.

And with multiple swimmers in the lane doing the same set, circle swimming, the start for each swimmer should be staggered by 5 or 10 seconds with the faster swimmers going ahead of the slower swimmers.

In an organized workout I think there's more of an expectation that people may join the workout in progress (especially in masters).

However, it does sound to me like these guys may have been slightly clueless about lane etiquette. Did you let them know they were in your way?

I hope you have a better experience next time. Definitely don't be afraid to remind your lanemates about proper swimming etiquette.
