I can swim them, but for my pool workouts I have pretty much always just been a crawl stroker for open water swimming, and general fitness. But several months ago, for whatever reason, I

RE: My odd kicks

Not for me. My *** (when I could do it) was second only to my fly - on my back or stomach, followed by free then back. Some of us have very powerful freestyle kicks but barely move if we flip over to our backs, and vice versa. Br kick seems to be one of those movements that if you can master it you move, and same with butterfly. Try having your coach watch each one or even better, video it so you can slow it down and see where you are loosing power on your kicks. Many of our tri/ runner team mates found that they have inefficient freestyle kicks by watching and comparing their foot positions on the various kicks.

RE: My odd kicks

Kick speed versus swim speed baffles me as well.
Swimming, most to least competitive: bk > fr >> br ~ fl.
Kicking, fastest to slowest: br >>> fr ~ fl* > bk.
What's that all about?

Bk kick is really a struggle for me, but it feels quite strong when I am actually swimming backstroke, and I've had coaches agree with this assessment.

My br kick is actually not that much slower than my br stroke.

*fly kick on back no board. With a board on my front my fly kick is by far the slowest, maybe 2:20 for a 100.
