Does anyone know what they were made of? A different kind of foam or something else? I hate the foam most are made of these days :cane:

The old school ocean boards may have been a phenolic resin foam that gets very hard (I'm not at all sure of this), as is used for hard board type roofing insulation. The newer boards seem to be EVA foam - Ethylene vinyl acetate foam and more flexible.

The wonders of modern organic chemistry - I wouldn't eat either of them. :)

RE: Old school tombstone kickboards?

I have seen the TYR boards more lately.

RE: Old school tombstone kickboards?

The closest I've come across these days is the black TYR board. Its similar in size and stiff enough, but its more floaty feeling so the ride is a bit higher. The yellow TYR board is the same size but it is more flimsy and bendy, and thus rides too low in the water.

The Ocean boards were the best hands-down. Does anyone know what they were made of? A different kind of foam or something else? It's old, missing a couple bite-sized chunks on the side, and it is ugly and vomit green. And I love that thing. Really need to Grand Theft Auto that thing but there is no way it would fit into my mesh bag.

Pretty sure it has a dolphin on it; can't really read the brand name as it has faded so much.

RE: Old school tombstone kickboards?

One of my college teammates threw an Ocean kickboard completely over the length of a 50 meter pool on one of our winter training trips. For some reason I took one bodysurfing. It was great, waves were easier to catch, I could steer, but I was still in the water instead of on it like with a boogie board.

RE: Old school tombstone kickboards?

Kiefer claims that theirs is the same, or sells it under a similar marque, but it doesn't have the flat bottom. I don't think it's the same ultra-floaty material, either.
The old ones made a nice sound when they fell on the deck--the new ones make a thunk. Not the same thing.
If anyone has one they'd sell, I'm buying.

RE: Old school tombstone kickboards?

I have some of the "new" boards.
