6th age group - that is an interesting way to keep track of the years. I hope to age up 3 more times - lord willing.

20 consecutive years of Masters swimming as of May 1st. I will begin my 6th age group (45+) this summer season.

I also saw the hands dragging through the water and , it seems to me, that the officials took a LONG time to DQ him as opposed to the one time 'glitch" that I see myself doing, that was called by a turn judge not a stroke judge.

orca1946 how did you like 91 year old doing 200 fly with perfect stroke technique? I think his name was Tom. Amazing race! I've seen that heat and the man you have mentioned - he couldn't recover his hands on the second half of the race.

As some of my friends,coaches and follow swimmers said to me--- :blah::blah:" They DQed a 70 year old in the 200 FLY?" & "They should give you a medal for finishing it!" "an under water recovery is usually at the wall, not in the pool!" I see the turn judge called it on me, not the stroke judge.:worms:

Maybe we need more "professional" officials and timers. At our Illinois state meet, we had to wake:bed: the poor kid up to time our relay - yes we really had to wake him up!!! :bed::bed: And this relay will probably be in the Top Ten for our age group in USMS records!!!!:banana::applaud:

underwater recovery? IDK man, I definitely see your frustration. Even if there was UWR, that would only slow a swimmer down. I just watched my 50fr where the timers called me from the block to see if my name was steve (which I already confirmed at prior heat) and it went back and forth for 10 seconds. They screwed up, and I understand human error happens, but I prepared for this single swim for months and it was ruined from the beginning, though I didn't get DQed. I wasn't expecting to come anywhere near to placing, but I still wanted to do my best.

OK I watched this about 10 times. I do remember hitting the lane line but, an under water recovery is hard to see from the turn judge's perspective , in my opinion, as I am going away from them. Guess I will need to work on something when I hit the lane lines in the future. This would have been my 6th medal and the best time in in 9 years for 2nd place!!!

My DQ notice was " an under water recovery" I was 3 kicks from the wall turn and he said it was my 2nd or 3 rd stroke that was called. I assume it was a stroke judge from the side cuz a turn judge could make that call from the end of the pool. I do remember hitting the lane line, as I have done countless times in practice, but do not remember doing anything differently. This is not an official statement - this is just my observation from watching the video. I think it was something they saw on your very first stroke on length #8. It looks like maybe you started a stroke, paused and then started again (which could be an underwater recovery). It was certainly nothing that would have improved your time, so hopefully you are still pleased with completing a 200 fly. For that you should be commended! Jeff

Denise --- a ship without an anchor will drift endlessly without that stabilizing device. So --- every ship needs an anchor, don't sell yourself short!

I have been a member for three years but don't swim with a team. I still don't ever see myself with a team and definitely not as a competitive swimmer. I'm more like an anchor than a fish.

An odd note to my 30 years in USMS I was "DQed " in my 200 fly at nationals. The 1st ever dq in fly for those 30 years! What's up with that???? What did they say you did wrong?

The first few pages of this report will give you some interesting membership statistics from the past 30 years. Anna Lea Matysek Thank you for posting those reports, Anna Lea. For the uninitiated, our growth rate since establishing paid, professional staff has pretty much flat lined, with one particular year that was simply awful. New membership growth is what we always need in order to not only stay viable, but keep dues reasonable. Unfortunately, the board of directors has not shown much interest in doing what it takes to grow at an aggressive rate (7% or more per year), instead just raising your dues $1 or 2 per year for ten years. The common thread in resisting growth (and it has been debated as long as USMS has been around) is that everyone envisions yet another body in their lane during workouts. Protecting turf gets expensive in a hurry, and it isn't even necessary. There are plenty of pools around, and plenty of areas ion the country that have never even heard of USMS. Rant over. I am 62 and have been a member continuously since 1977 (39 years).

I just returned rom 2016 S C nationals with 5 medals out of 6 races with a VERY QUESTIONABLE dq in my 200 fly !!!!!!!!!!!! So this 30 th year of Masters has ended on a very good note. I'm looking forward to the next decade! Great job Oz!! What did they say was reason for DQ?

Been in masters since 2014, so my sophomore year in college. so slightly more than 2 years in the 18-24 age group. I love every moment of it and have done several swim meets! It is awesome to relive my age group swim days! I am definitely gonna miss swimming at the Texas A&M Natatorium when I graduate 2 weeks from now! I am excited about the LC South Central Zone Championship Meet being held at A&M this summer. Already reserved that date to go.
