I think the issue may be more the "has been sick with bronchitis" thing than just his age. He's only one year older than he was at last year's World Championship trials, and he made the team then.

RE: Grant Hackett (and other Masters-age swimmers at Aus trials)

He swam a bit slower in the final and came in 4th. Ryan Pini - born 1981, so 35-39 if it was a Masters meet - won in 23.67. 2004/2008/2012 Olympian (and 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medalist) representing PNG. Main event 100 fly. Wonder if he'll be there in Rio.

Edit: Ryan Pini's 100 back is pretty good too! He just went 54.99 in prelims. Ash Delaney (who turns 30 this week) 3rd fastest in 54.42

Hacket 5th fastest in his 200 free heat - semis tonight Australian time, finals tomorrow night.

Linley Frame (who has aged up to 45-49) placed 20th in the 100 *** with 1:12.69. She will hopefully swim thereabouts again at Masters Nationals in a fortnight, where the WR will count!
