So this summer I have been working non-stop towards summer nationals in August. I usually swim every day and lift every other day. Whenever I take a day off, it's because I REALLY need it. With the holiday weekend this week, I was forced to

RE: How many days off are too many?

When you think you've had too many day's off from swimming, then you've had too many day's off.

However if your are in So. Calif. the water could possibly evaporate and go away. Then I would worry.

Well, I could swim in the ocean its only six blocks away. I really need to do this more often.

RE: How many days off are too many?

It takes me longer to warm-up and "get into a flow" in a workout after 2 days off but later in the week I feel more energetic and swim a bit faster in practice. If I go a few weeks working hard with just 1 day a week off I start swimming slower, feeling exhausted both in and out of the pool, and dread going to practice. I think the older you get the more rest and recovery you need, otherwise I feel like I am just practicing slow swimming.

RE: How many days off are too many?

You will be fine. You will have no conditioning loss in 2 days and the extra recovery may be useful in the midst of heavy training.

RE: How many days off are too many?

No.
